The M16 is not used by most front line infantry or mech units these days....most use M4s. The 14.5” is the ‘standard’. I’d agree that the 16” middy gas has merits as a more versatile configuration, but an 18” rifle and collapsible stock might suit 80% or more of the military the best, with the 11.5 for ‘special’ use folks. Requirements, demands, conflicts, ammo, technology/accessories have dictated much of the transformation into a beefier weapon system. A2/3/4 and M4s can shoot 55s-77s equally well. A1s not so much.
