Has anyone been using a newer 870 how is the quality and functionality. I have a mid 90's Express that I shoot better with than my Browning Silver. I have heard so much about Remington's poor quality for several years. I'm wondering if Remington has upped their standards.

I think they have. I have a few spanning from about 9 years to one bought earlier this year. No issues with sticky chambers or rust either. My dad also has a few from the last few years and they all seem fine as well.

Plenty of lightly used ones out there if you don’t want to take a chance on a new one.

I’d prefer an older one, a Wingmaster. Those were nice, fit and finish, overall quality.

To me better than new ones.

My bud has 2 and they both work like a dream.

They are about 4 and 2 years old.

Altho my thots run along this line—I have a Wingmaster from 1974. Never had
a problem with it......

I have one of the 200 th anniversary models from 2016 in the closet. It doesn't eject dependably. It has been back to Remington 3 times and still doesn't eject dependably. Extractors, extractor springs, complete bolts have been swapped out. Ejector spring has been "tuned" by Remington technician and still no joy. Remington refused to refund my money so I'm stuck with an expensive lamp. Buy anything Remington at your own risk. You may be throwing your money away on useless junk that big green will not stand behind.

jwall, I have a Wingmaster from '75. 20ga. I got two barrels with it; One fixed Mod, the other is I/C. No vent rib.
Won't be sending that one down the road. Great shotgun.

Have 3 from 30 years old to 7-8 years old. The 7 year old has run many thousands of rounds and not a single hiccup. It is just now starting to get "smooth" It's a keeper.

I totally agree. Just bought one a few weeks ago in like new condition for less that $300. Made in '79.

mines about 8 yrs old, i've hunted ducks in the salt the last 5-6 years with it, might have cleaned it once still works fine.

Shotguns are the only area Remington has kept up. The new 870s are as nice or nicer than any generation imho and the current express guns are better by a big margin than their predecessors. My only complaint is the mom extractor and yes I’ve had them fail. It’s a cheap and easy fix though.

Ive had 70s and 80s era Wingmaster magnums, police abd special fields and special purpose.

Had express too.

Zero issues.

Only have one 870 now....
Supermag express turkey model.
It aint perfect fit and finish but shoots where its supposed to. Bought used like new for 215.

Killed piles of stuff with it.

I hunt it hard and dont care.....still looks like new. Crazy.

Old walnut RKW Magnums are neat, but IMHO too nice for what im doing. Sold mine years ago (pair) and went SP.

I have an old 870, probably circa early 70's, I'd guess. It's semi-retired at this point, only seeing use when I hunt in a slug gun only area. Smooth as butter, and never a jam. Not once. I've had several of the newer 870's pass through my hands. I don't care for the Express guns. They just don't seem very smooth. Of the newer Wingmaster guns I've had, they all functioned just fine, but didn't feel as smooth as my older one, but it could just be that the older one's had countless thousands of rounds run through it between small game hunting, duck and deer hunting, and a lot of casual trap shooting.

I know the Express had a few issues around 10 years ago. Seems like the chamber had a cut or chip in some of them, making extraction/ejection next to impossible. Most sent them back to Remington and got them replaced for free.

I bought one last week. $319 for a synthetic/blued with a $50 rebate coming from Remington. That's $269 for a 26" / 12 gauge w/ vent rib.

Seems like a decent enough tool and I can't argue with that price.

Yup.....fully agreed......and that applies to model 700s as well.
