Going to put the muzzleloader away this year and slug hunt for the first time in years. I bought a cantilevered rifled barrel for my old 870 and am wondering about one of these types of sights for deer hunting. Maybe something like the Vortex Venom that comes with Weaver/Picatinny mounts and/or can be moved to a pistol later.

It seems like it would make for very fast target acquisition if stalking or set up as the shooter on a drive. I dunno....just a thought.

What do you all think? Anybody using a similar setup on a slug gun or even deer rifle?

I think with a 1-2.5 MOA dot on them you’d be a killing mofo with a shotgun. They’ve worked for years on the battlefield at much greatEr distances than most use a slug gun.

They’re very good for speed. A regular 1-4 or similar is better in low light, with a good reticle.

Never owned one (yet) but my answer to any question on red dots, assuming one has the bucks, is Aimpoint. Have had a couple of Bushnells and one Vortex crap almost right out of the box. They were replaced, but that's no help in deer camp.

I still have a few, but only on fun guns where a failure isn't a real problem.

Amazon has 9000-series Aimpoints for under $500.

The failed Vortex may have been a fluke as that particular model has a pretty good rep for toughness, and the other one I have has been used a good bit without issue. Still, like scopes, you mostly get what you pay for, and and if reliability is really important, spend the money and get it,

What fresh Hell is this?
