Back story: My uncle took a fatal fall while hunting about 10 years ago in southern Oregon. He was using my grandpa’s rifle which has killed many deer, a tang safety 99F in 308 which went down the mountain with him.
Grandpa passed in 2016 and I received the rifle in 2017. A very special gift from my dad. The trigger was broken in the fall and had been replaced when I got the rifle. The new trigger seems to be in working order, but...
-The auto cutoff spring does not work and is loose. -There is some pretty bad cracking at the tang. -The stock/receiver fit is also pretty bad.
I want to hunt with this rifle but don’t feel comfortable shooting it with the stock like it is. I would really rather not replace the stock. Thus I have not fired it.
Have been reading threads on here about tang crack repairs and it looks to be pretty doable. I have been to a few gunsmiths in my area (Memphis/Nashville) but none that are familiar with working on 99s. This is not something I want to attempt myself.
Is there someone here on the forum or elsewhere who would be able to fix the cutoff, repair the stock, and refit it to the receiver? I’ll pay good money for a proper job. The rifle is already beat up so it would not need to look pristine, I’m only concerned with function.
There is a 3x Leupold waiting in the safe (Grandpa’s scope was broken in the fall) and will be using Grandpa’s sling. Needless to say this is pretty important to me and I would be extremely grateful for any and all help.
Many thanks. Sam

Sam I live in southern Oregon, near Medford. I won't charge you if you want to send it to me I'll at least do my best to make it right for you. I have time in winter when work slows down and I have an inventory of most parts. You pay shipping and I'll do my best. Send me a message if you want to chat. No worries if you go another route.

Your family treasure would be in good hands Sam. Just be sure to tell FB what color powder coat you want just kidding of course. Roy will do you good.

Well, while we're at it, Roy do you know anything about Shorrock superchargers for MGB's? I'll put the car in the mail to you if you do.

That Fireball is definitely a good man. From what I've seen he has the talent to pull it off, and he's highly thought of here.

I've hunted those rocks for blacktail bucks and nearly fallen many times. Moss covered cliffs, fog, rain, brush... I can't imagine what the OP's family has been through. I want to make that rifle right if I can. It won't bring back the man lost.

A much-belated update. The rifle turned out gorgeous! The man is a wizard and would take no money. I’ve tried to post pictures a few times from my phone with no luck. I will figure something out.
Will be taking this rifle out this fall to hunt whitetails in Bolivar, Tennessee. It shoots straight and reminds me every time I pull it out that all hope is not lost. I’m still floored by this “display of humanity”. Fireball, many thanks to you sir. Photos incoming soon.

SRW85, there's an Image Gallery forum where you can upload larger pictures. I think there's still a restriction of 2MB or so, but it handles more.
Glad it turned out good!

Losing someone dear to you while they were out hunting is a hell of a thing. Seems like it happens here in Oregon to some poor guy every year or two. I hunt alot where the oriental fella and his family got stuck in the snow and after a week he left and went for help, only to perish. The family was found soon after. Now they've got winter warning signs up all over and they close the road to the coast each November.
I got hypothermia once on an archery goat hunt in Washington and been in tight spots a time or two but thankfully no bad falls or broken bones. Oregon has some treacherous country and blacktails like it. Sorry about your uncle OP. I felt your pain I guess and wanted to help. Glad you're happy with the rifle.

It seems like a bunch of us are late to this thread. I'm on here almost every day and missed big parts of the thread until now. Has the forum got a malfunction somewhere?

I think SRW just followed up with the happy ending to an old thread. Which he deserves a thank you also. Several years ago I guy cried and cried about 22HP stuff. I sent him a bunch on my dime, and he never posted again. This follow up is the kind of stuff that keeps this family together.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.
