Just finished reading David Royal's book, twice. I'm new to the 99 cult and I know everyone has their favorites, but the 1893 prototype is the one I keep going back to look at. It's elegant. Sure wish they would of continued with it, a small bore 99 would be a great rifle and a companion to your deer rifle. I even like the caliber (32-20) the 93 was chambered in.
What is everyones favorite 99, we like them all, I'm sure, but everyone has a favorite one. The one that they keep coming back to pick it up and just admire it.

Pre-war R does it for me for looking at and hunting with. Post war F with the notched comb after that.

I really like the 250's, in any flavor. But, my 1928 K in 300 keeps working it's way to the front of the safe.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

My EG is nice.... but my next 99 in a perfect world would be a take-down model in a Savage caliber. Checkered straight stock, or that open pistol grip I've seen in pictures. Octagonal barrel or half round barrel. Not sure what model that would be, or if they even made it. Probably would just buy the best one I could that showed up.locally to look at.

Jesus would have shot a Savage in 284 if he had been a hunter.

I don't really like Savages. I'm more a Marlin man. Angus1895 That is like me saying I don't like redheads because I am married to a blonde. 50 years in January and I still get whiplash when a hot redhead goes by! Now as far as 99's go my go to is my 250f. Or my 300eg, or my 30-30g, or is it the 308f. Actually it's the one I see that I don't have. Whatever the hair color as long as it's natural. Reminds me my cd243 is pretty sexy for a young one.

My favorite 1899s are pre-WW1 1899CDs, particularly those with 1/2R-1/2O barrels.

Favorite for looking at? That 1893 that you recently discovered. That is a work of art and I happen to be a big fan of the 32-20. But like most things I cannot touch, I try not to dwell on it.
Favorite that I can touch, fondle, and take home? The 1895 Carbine. Not technically a 99, but neither is the 1893...
Favorite 99? The 1899H Featherweight. If I ever own one, it'll probably be a .303, unless I can find one in 38-55. Never say never!

Featherweights weren't cataloged in 32-40 or 38-55. The barrel was probably too skinny to handle the larger diameter bullets.
wyo1895 With Savage never say never. For a copy of my book on engraved Savage lever actions rifles send a check for $80 to; David Royal, p.o. box 1271, Pinedale, Wy., 82941. I will sign and inscribe the book for you. [email protected]

I've read everything I can find on the subject! I was counting on Rick99's "Never say never"! Some well-to-do fella in the way back might have thrown enough money at Savage and they made a one of a kind. So like I said, it'll probably be a .303, but I am a dreamer...

I almost added "never say never" to my post. After all the catalogs say the 1899H is not available with high grade wood but I have one and have seen several others.
