I've got a pattern stock that has most of the inlet done with AcraGel. There are a bunch of tiny spots where it is pock marked and not smooth. Will hardware store epoxies work to smooth up the AcraGel surfaces or are they incompatible (as in won't bond to) with AcraGel? I have no trouble buying AcraGlass if I need it for filler, but I just as soon use the hardware store epoxy I have on hand if it isn't critical. Since it's a pattern stock there's no need to try to make it look good, just have surfaces smooth and true enough for the duplicator stylus to follow nicely.

Scrub the pre-existing epoxy with acetone before applying the new stuff. If building up any areas with new epoxy, give it the acetone wash and scuff it with sandpaper also.

Just make sure that there is no release agent there.

Why put a weaker product on top of a strong one?
For minor defects, if they amount to cosmetic, I'd just ignore them anyway.

For minor defects, if they amount to cosmetic, I'd just ignore them anyway. Just to fill what may be air bubble pits. I figure the better I make the pattern, the happier the tracer will be following the contours. There probably will be a couple of places to use Bondo, probably mostly to get the forearm symmetrical.

If it were me, I'd dremel the accraglass and if the op wants to go over it with an epoxy, get some gray marine tex or JB weld (industro with steel) and skim bed it. It will look better and be stronger than accraglass anyway. I don't particularly care for accraglass. There are much better bedding compounds out there...

You only want to make it smooth so the tracker slides nicely?
Bondo or spot putty.
Cheap, easy, quick, sands easy...
More than strong enough.
