There is a guy in Kerrville that won’t touch a “paint job “ for less than $35k.

Its Maaco around here
I think they are all more or less independent dealers so one shop might do a great job, others not so much
As others have said, I believe the secret is doing all the prep work yourself. I think its around $290 for their basic job now and extra for clear coat.
I plan on doing it for my truck if and when I find time to prep it.

Alkyd Enamel at it's best. The old "Duluxe" paint by DuPont Earl got it in 55 gallon drums in basic colors. Took at least 3 weeks to fully cure in good weather...... Didn't Scheib come up with baking the finish to speed up turnover time?

I shot bullseye with Earl Scheib. Think he was a master if not a high master.

I was told by some motorhead types the secret was to do all your own prepwork, sanding, remove trim, etc.
Being in SoCal didn't hurt, you could almost always be assured of enough good weather for a good cure.
When a decent car cost $150, who wants to spend more than $29.95 for a paint job anyway?
Geno That's what I did to my 53 Plymouth before I took it in. 1965 in San Jose where I grew up. Was all I could afford, didn't turn too bad, actually. I think Miracle Auto Painting was around at the time as well.

I used a Maaco once for a minor bender. I wasn't all that happy.
This Spring, I dropped my 100-pound kayak on the rear hatch of my Highlander. A six-inch crease. Went to a good body shop. Repair and repaint was $1300. My deductible was $500. I'm going to be a LOT more careful loading that kayak next year...

I remember some movie or cop show where they had a kid who stole bikes and repainted them before selling them. They referred to him as "Earl Schieb Lopez". I believe that must have been Police Story. Joseph Wambaugh had that character in one of his books. kwg

Growing up, Earl Scheib was all my dad used to paint his cars when they needed it. I had a couple of my cars painted by Earl Scheib as well. As stated, the secret is to do all the prep yourself. Sand, wash, mask, remove trim, and all that jazz.
Back then all we bought were used cars. It wasn't like we were going to keep them for 10 years. So it made no sense to get a high-dollar paint job.
