There is a guy in Kerrville that won’t touch a “paint job “ for less than $35k.

Not really out of line from what I've read - There was a good article on the issue in Hemmings a bit ago. Obviously not a beater level paint job though!

Its Maaco around here

I think they are all more or less independent dealers so one shop might do a great job, others not so much

As others have said, I believe the secret is doing all the prep work yourself. I think its around $290 for their basic job now and extra for clear coat.

I plan on doing it for my truck if and when I find time to prep it.

Didn't Scheib come up with baking the finish to speed up turnover time?

I shot bullseye with Earl Scheib. Think he was a master if not a high master.

Being in SoCal didn't hurt, you could almost always be assured of enough good weather for a good cure.

When a decent car cost $150, who wants to spend more than $29.95 for a paint job anyway?

That's what I did to my 53 Plymouth before I took it in. 1965 in San Jose where I grew up. Was all I could afford, didn't turn too bad, actually. I think Miracle Auto Painting was around at the time as well.

I used a Maaco once for a minor bender. I wasn't all that happy.

This Spring, I dropped my 100-pound kayak on the rear hatch of my Highlander. A six-inch crease. Went to a good body shop. Repair and repaint was $1300. My deductible was $500. I'm going to be a LOT more careful loading that kayak next year...

I believe that must have been Police Story. Joseph Wambaugh had that character in one of his books.

You, know, that might be where I got it from instead of the screen. Thanks for the reminder.

Growing up, Earl Scheib was all my dad used to paint his cars when they needed it. I had a couple of my cars painted by Earl Scheib as well. As stated, the secret is to do all the prep yourself. Sand, wash, mask, remove trim, and all that jazz.

Back then all we bought were used cars. It wasn't like we were going to keep them for 10 years. So it made no sense to get a high-dollar paint job.
