It seems the organization formerly known as the Boy Scouts have mortgaged the Philmont Scout Ranch. The document contains a maximum lein clause of $450MM.

Does anyone familiar with the organization know why they would need to maintain such a large line of credit?

I do know that the LDS pulling out of Scouting really cut their numbers and funding.

I went to Camp Bert Adams in Atlanta five years in a row, in the sixties when I was in Scouts. What a wonderful time I had there.
So sad to see this once great organization in decline. Bad sign for the future of America.

The LDS was held responsible for 25% of the negligence in the Kerry Lewis v. Boy Scouts of America case that opened the can of worms for both organizations back in 2010. That case was eventually settled in Oregon for 18.5M.

The LDS put distance between themselves and the BSA for liable and financial reasons.

The real damage from that case was forth coming after they also demanded the release of the previously hidden "BSA Perversion Files" which contained the documentation of 7,800 names, many with evidence of multiple victims of pedophile activity with in the BSA. 450M isn't gonna put a dent in damages that will be awarded.

John Does I-IV sued the Boy Scouts of America and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Federal Court. The corporations, and the corporation of the Mormons’ presiding bishop, are the only defendants. The alleged abuses came in the 1980s.
John Doe I, now 43, claims that in 1982 he was sodomized and subjected to “physical, sexual and emotional abuse,” at the hands of scout leader James Schmidt.
Doe I claims both the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church) were notified as early as 1979 that Schmidt was a pedophile and had been abusing Scouts. He claims Schmidt abused him for six months on Boy Scout camping trips, at an LDS ward building and in the attic of Boy Scout Council headquarters in Boise. more

Much like the Catholic Church, the Mormons have a lot more money and will probably survive it all in the long run, the BSA will not...

A few years ago when I researched this my troop was clean, but many near-by me were not. With out question I went to events such as Jamborees and the like where there were kids present that were being sexually abused as well as Troop leaders that were sexually abusing.

If I was a cynic I would say it’s a gambit to lessen the chance of huge punitive damages
In a lawsuit. Punitives are based on defendants net worth, so it isn’t unheard of for an organization facing the chance of a bunch of lawsuits to run up some debt in order to look less prosperous

The most popular belief is the fault lays on the shoulders of those that created a protected environment for pedophiles to rape children in... That's the way the courts are seeing it anyway...

Boy Scouts not so much. I left after a year. Didn't like the advisor but they did offer a free Hunter Safety Program to get a hunting license.
They don't do that anymore, and let girls with cooties join.

It's a shame that the Boy Scouts were ruined by leftist social justice warriors.

I was a scout and was very fortunate to have a great scoutmaster that gave us so much of his time. Looking back I remember some scout masters from other towns that I knew to avoid. There have been pervs in the organization for a long time. I wouldn't have been a scout if the leader wasn't good.

I grew up in suburban Atlanta but I was a wild man at heart. My dad had no interest in camping out, or shooting guns.
I got in to the Boy Scouts in 1961. I was 10 years old. We went camping out once a month, I loved it. And on our camp outs we got to shoot a rifle.
Scout leaders taught me how to light a camp fire with just one match. These were tough men who were officers in WW2. They taught me how to tie knots. Living in the country, dragging logs out of the woods to build log cabins with and for firewood, I have to tie a bowline knot about once a month. I go right back to what I learned in Scouts in 1962.

Camp Bert Adams had a one week camp for Scouts. But they also had a special week called Aquatics Week. So for 3 consecutive years, I went to camp for 2 weeks. You could earn 4 merit badges in one week. You spent about 12 hours a day in the pool, and in the lake. Canoeing, Swimming merit badges. I also did the Mile Swim, let me tell you for a 12 year old kid it was like Navy SEAL training and I became a hell of a good swimmer.

If there was any pervert stuff going on I was totally unaware of it. Never saw a Scout leader luring a kid into his tent after dark, never heard a word about a pervert.

It makes me so sad to see Boy Scouts in decline.

I was a scout growing up, and was the den leader for my son's cub scout troop. I was also an assistant couch for my kids soccer teams. Never witnessed any improper behavior. Would have reported it to the police if I had. All organizations had a two deep policy that required two adults always be present with kids. No adults left alone with kids. Cant understand why anyone wouldn't have reported it to the police. Cant understand a list of suspected pedophiles being maintained by any organization without the names having already been given to the police.
