I am ALWAYS ready for drilling-porn. I would love to see some pictures. Charles Daly imported quite a few drillings in 38-55 and in 30-30 around the turn of the century, many being Sauer sidelocks like this one (I was an IDIOT to have sold this sidelock 16/30-30 drilling!). It could also be a Linder, which is even better. The Sauers first came as hammer guns, but they later went to a side cock for the rifle hammerless design. It's a great design. The left side cocking/selector lever can be held down while pulling the trigger and let up slowly to un-cock the rifle and de-select it. These used the back trigger for the rifle. Almost all other drillings use the front. PICTURES PLEASE...

That is a very nice drilling. I really like the under lever style, is that a 9.3x72R/16ga/16ga?
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

That's a fantastic drilling! Any idea who the engraver was? It's possible several engravers worked on it. As house gunmaker to the Kaiser and King, these were to be as perfect as possible. Nagel & Menz no doubt employed the finest craftsmen. Some engravers specialized in scroll work, while others were wildlife artists. I was excited to find the gun and will use it in the field on my quail and some preserve pheasant. No stumbling up grouse and chuckar mountains for this gun.

You can most likely need no more than five for the rest of your life if you don't lose them.
Just looking at it is the selector on the back of the right hammer? I don't think I've ever noticed one like that befor..
Beautiful Damascus pattern on it also, are RST's in your future.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

The right hammer is hinged to move into position to shoot the rifle. The BIG cost is having a die set made from a chamber cast...then there's the cost of 2 1/2" 1125FPS RST paper hull fiber wad ammo. I already have some ammo from them saved in my checkout. We think alike. (Sorry to offend you...lol)

The gun showed up today. It's been hunted, but for a 142 year old gun it's very nice. It's as tight as an old Westinghouse refrigerator with mirror bores, all three. Now the lllooonnnggg wait until the ammo arrives Monday or Tuesday.

Beautiful Damascus pattern on it also, are RST's in your future. It's a snap to select the rifle. Just push the top half of the right hammer forward into position to strike the rifle striker lug.

It appears to be the old BP 10X47R chambering. I'll have Lee do a chamber cast Monday. C&H has the dies, and Huntington's has 9.5X47R brass, an easy one pass through the sizer proposition. I ordered some 180 gr and some 220 gr cast bullets. They are for a 40 S&W and are the correct .401 diameter. With luck I'll be smoking up all three barrels soon.

luv, I did an article on the 10.5 X 47R for Waidmannsheil, one of the publications for the GGCA. if you're interested I'll find out which issue. From my research and the twist on my rifle, a 260 gr. bullet from an Accurate mold and 61 grs.of Ffg Schuetzen was about perfect and provided about 2 inch groups at 50 yards, open sights, benched and bagged. I can't remember the velocity but I believe the energy was either around 1100 fpe or 1300 fpe. At one time Grafs also had 9.5 X 47R cases. When I got my combination gun nothing like that was available so I sacrificed some of my 11.15 X 60R cases and made them into 10.5 X 47R. Worked just fine, if a bit pricey.

Thanks, Sharps.
I find it appears to be a 10X47R. C&H has dies, but my 41 mag dies will re-load brass, and I can get 9.5X47R cases. That might be a good way to start out.
I got some .401 cast bullets in 180gr and 220gr to experiment with.
Rest assured I'll be in touch for some tech advice.
I have to get the swing down right hammer spring re-arched; the hammer top flips back up when released, hitting the shotgun striker.

Hello Fella's I'm a newbie here and just want to compliment that Drilling! Wow! What a piece of art. It is magnificent! Thanks for posting. I've been a hunter and collector for my whole 60 years on this earth and always wanted a nice drilling. For some strange reason, they have always evaded me. One day, I'll find the right one.......Ed

Hello, '06, I did further research and feel this was made for a Baron who probably vacationed in Baden Baden. The coronet tells me it's a low ranked nobel's gun. The rifle appears to be in 10X47R. I made up one case using a 45-70 brass. It will be MUCH easier with the 348 brass a very generous member is sending. I need to have the right hammer head pivot spring strengthened considerably, as it pops back to the shotgun position on firing. It will be an easy job for Lee LeBas to correct. I got and shot some RST ammo, and it shoots great. I have to contend with an almost 16" LOP. The Baron was a giant!
