Judging by the hills that's the nice part of MD out west,

A few photos I snapped around the homestead over the past two weeks...

On my way down the hill to get breakfast the other morning, and these two lovely ladies were hanging out at the bottom of my driveway.


Sunrise and early morning around the homestead. The oak trees are "peaking" with their fall colors.

Well, Mrs Deb took matters into her own hands last night.

Decided to sit for the afternoon, as we had a cold front coming in.

I got the call at 4:45pm, Savage lady hunter in 7mm-08, 120gr TTSX Barnes Vortx, 2-7 x Redfield revolution.

By the time I got there, she had half the drag to the trail completed.







As you can see, she was quite happy !

So good. One of my favorite meals ever, and easily my favorite small game animal to eat. And hunt for that matter.

I love hunting squirrels. You get the challenges of seeing difficult game, then stalking silently to get a shot, and shoot more than when after big game.

Grey and fox squirrels are challenging in thick woods with leaves.

Do those squirrels get acorns?

They do eat acorns but ponderosa pine (nuts from cones and the branches themselves) and mushrooms are their primary food sources

You can taste the pine nuts in the meat when you eat them

Looking for Mr Big. Not looking good. Pipeline going through 400 yards away, drilling rigs and processing plants going in everywhere, open access, oilfield workers poaching, night hunting ....try to catch. The desert is covered by it. Its work to find a pic with a good background.

Ive heard the little western pine squirrels taste like pine rosen. I like pinion nuts. Does the pine nut mast give a good flavor..

I think it does. The aftertaste can be very similar to piñon nuts.
