Got to the ranch about 2. 4ish I walked back of the cabin about 1/2 mile to watch an opening. Lots of trails and sign. Saw many smallbucks. Nothing I would shoot. About 5:40 I start easing back to the cabin. Watched same deer I saw earlier. Got between two motts about 15 yards apart. And now its getting dark. Look over scross opening toward the lane and hell. There’s a damn nilgai bull walking out in the open. I’m kinda in shadows so he ain’t on to me. Standing offhand I pit sights where I think they should go Boom, flop! DRT. I chamber another round and start pacing to the bull. 140 paces. 63 y o old azz eyes. Freezer meat. He went down like he was poleaxed. More in a minite. Gutting him wore me out. Gotta catch my breath. Skinning and quartering next. 1895 mfg in 1915. .30 US Army ctg. 220 grain Hornady RN. I think 46 or 47 grains IMR 4064.

Nice one and you killed it with an old rifle with open sights, even better.

What cut are you going to eat first and how are you going to cook it? That hide would make a mighty nice rug, too.

That’s awesome Bob! I remember you talking about hunting Nilgai and it being the best meat. Glad to see you got a nice one!

There's gotta be a 24HCF award or something for the coolest animal taken with the coolest rifle this season!
I carried my 1895 .405 deer hunting last week, but alas, no deer.

KW,
Come on now - fess up! We know you can’t kill something as tough as a nilgai bull with a 30/40 with a c&c bullet.
Heck of a nice hunt and story, thanks for taking us along!

That is OUTSTANDING, Bob...congrats! I dunno if I could do that...every time I get ready to shoot one of my leverguns I have to check them because they always look like the front sight has fallen off.

Were you wearin' any funny pants or such?
A nice hat at minimum is a surety.
Congrats and enjoy the work and the eatin'. Like splitting wood, it's well worth it afterward.
Geno
PS forgot to add, I just love those spotted socks on them critters. I have to get to TX someday to hunt them.
