After several evenings of looking at smaller bears, I finally found a bear worthy of a TSX. Had to scare off 2 other 5' bears to get to the one I wanted, but after a 20 minute stalk and a 177 yard quartering toward me shot, I had my first bear of 07. The 210 TSX(.338 Ultra) did alot more than I expected, not only dropping the bear in its tracks, but full length penetration and exit.

Mark, since I know you will ask, I didn't measure the skull......(grins) Based on the bears I have shot though and knowing the area I hunt, this bear will go over 18.5, but less than 19. He measured 5'3" to the base of the tail in the round and would square out over 6' no problem. Front pads were just shy of 4 3/4".

Nice job. The .338 caliber in whatever form is good bear medicine.

Nice bear!

Now, if you had to "scare off" two other bears - does that mean you just happened to be frying bacon and eggs :), or were you calling them in?

All I can say, is you are lucky you dropped such a bear, being that you were as inadequately armed as you were...

This guy didn't like my calls, I made an attempt on him a few days before I shot him and tried calling him out into the open. I've made a few call sets this season, mostly in late April, but have only brought in 2 coyotes for my efforts, but dogs are closed frown

The night I did get him, there was a weather system blowing in and the bears were out thick. I walked into a 30 mph headwind, which took care of my scent and also any sounds. My bear was hugging the treeline and disappeared twice on the stalk, as the wind was obviously making him nervous. He was the third bear in as many years that I have shot off that same patch of grass. I'm considering building a mobile loading dock nearby... grin
