They wear out to.

In 1979 after I bought the Cat 944A, I bought two pair of 25 x 17.5 chains, and a hundred feet of bulk crossbar chain for $1100.
Most of that is long worn out as well.

Yes Sam, that camera is smarter than I am. It has so many settings I'm confused. I think it changes going in. and out of the case.

Makin chains. I remember working out of one side of this building and the other side was the yard and shop where the highway plows worked out of. When winter kicked in there was one guy in a bay by himself and that's all he did, fix and make chains. He had 45 gallon drums full of chain stock and a huge bench set up. He had huge crimpers but welded some of it too.

Those plyers in the lower right in one picture are a must for changing the crossbars.

Maybe not as cool, but mine will be going in the truck on Tuesday when I load up for elk camp. Forecast is showing some snow and rain this year so it might get sporty.

One thing about the chains, you need crossbars long enough to set low enough on the sidewall to keep them from running off.

Brings back some memories.
Worked for a farmer that made maple syrup.
Early January we started cutting roads open and distributing
buckets and spiles. 4 tractors running chains from then until
March or April. Pulling wagon tanks around the woods, and on the
roads, we tore up some chains.

My father likes to talk about hauling coal with his brother in law in the mid to late forties in West Virginia. They'd pick up from a small punch mine about five miles off the paved road, chains went on to pick up and back to pavement, a lot of customers were on dirt roads so chains back on, repeat multiple times.

I have a pair for my little tractor. Weather report says they'll come in handy soon.
