Went looking for wolves and/or elk earlier this week in sw Montana. No bueno.
Came home Friday night with a plan to take the boy hunting Saturday and Sunday to get him a deer andor elk. Slowly as I drove across Montana Friday evening, all my options for the weekend hunt fell apart. The boy was really disappointed Friday night when I got home.
I got up at 3:30 Saturday morning and started looking through block management areas available to us. Scoped out a few. Took off Saturday morning for the gumbo. Got to a bma around noon and it was windy as hell. Nothing out. Didn't look good.
After traveling a rim for about 1 1/2 miles glassing everything below and to the east, we were about to quit and move on. Saw nothing out except for about 50 antelope. Went to one last spot to glass and I spotted a buck about 600 yards away bedded halfway up the hill leading to the rim we had been glassing from.
Boy and I stalked to a point above where he was bedded. Couldn't see him. Moved to another spot, couldn't see him. Finally on the third try I see the buck below me following a doe. Get the boy up to the edge and set up the shooting sticks. Watched the buck breed the doe. We are civilized. Let him finish his job and then I told the boy to take a shot when he felt comfortable.
Couple shots later, the buck is down and the work begins. Had to drag the buck up about 125 up the hill to the top of the bench.
Nice tall 4 point buck. Was on state lands in the bma. Pretty nice deer. Dropped the head off to get cleaned and bleached. They said it would be done by Wednesday.

Does ""boy "" have a name He does and it depends on how temperamental he is being, which one we call him. Great kid but the hormones cause him to flash a bit occasionally. That must be from his mother.
