Great answer. Don’t play Dirty Harry is you are not threatened. Duck and hide. Depending on where you live, smoking some thug with your CCW could ruin your life. If they just want the money, let them take it and let everyone else go home alive without lawyers and a trip to the station. What are we talking, $6-700 in a cash register?

Now if it’s getting violent and the perps start pistol whipping people and things are escalating towards criticize mass, that’s why you have the CCW

THIS, though tough to say if you weren't there.

I just dread the thought of opening fire in a crowded venue....

Idaho is pretty liberal on self defense. You can use a gun to defend yourself, your family, your home, your property, and your place of work. Stores aren't on the list.

Yep. Probably in most cases with others around the perp would just get the money and run.

I was in a used record shop in Ft Lauderdale in 93 when a car pulled up in front of the shop on a guy with a fabric back tote got out of the back seat and walked in.
The shop has a round central register area with 2 cash registers and the clerk was at the one on the right the guy went to the opposite one and put the pack on the counter and stuck his right hand inside waiting for the clerk to turn around.
While waiting he was scanning the shop incessantly.
I was facing the opposite direction he was with my strong side towards him.
I swept my cover garment when his gaze cast my direction and retrieved my wallet while exposing the cocked and locked 1911 stuck in my waistband.
He looked directly into my eyes, picked up the pack and walked out of the store getting into the car that literally peeled out of the parking lot.

If hes pointing a gun at the cashier when you shoot, who would you be defending?

I got a CCW License to defend myself and loved ones from physical harm. Money and property are not a consideration. In a public place, I would discreetly draw and stay alert, but not act unless the bad guy attempted violence. As someone already stated it’s a robbery not a shooting.

I thot I mentioned that little "what if" you were standing in the check out line and the perp stepped in FRONT of YOU and pointed a gun at the cashier across the counter from YOU and demanded money?

Details, man, it's the details that get you on those state board license exams.

Too many variables to speculate about...my response (or lack of) would depend on a lot of things....my kneejerk reaction would be to disarm him.

The robber's attitude and actions would heavily influence what my response would be. If he's pretty calm and it appears he just wants a pocketful of money, be a good witness. If he's some sort of amped-up tweaker who's bouncing off the walls and it appears he's likely to start shooting for no good reason, I'm probably going to try to take him out if I can do it without injuring any bystanders.

Idaho Code 19-202A addresses when an individual may use force in self-defense.

“No person in this state shall be placed in legal jeopardy of any kind whatsoever for protecting himself or his family by reasonable means necessary, or when coming to the aid of another whom he reasonably believes to be in imminent danger of or the victim of aggravated assault, robbery, rape, murder or other heinous crime,” the statute states.

Bonneville County Prosecutor Daniel Clark said the rule is similar to when shootings by law enforcement are scrutinized.

The key word in the statute is “reasonable.” In cases such as Roof’s, the individual who introduces a gun into a conflict must not only believe they’re under threat, put prove a reasonable person would feel the same way.

the consolidation of the states into one vast republic, sure to be aggressive abroad and despotic at home, will be the certain precursor of that ruin which has overwhelmed all those that have preceded. Robert E Lee

If I was right behind the guy with the gun (or knife) threatening the clerk I would him shoot him in the back of his head (brain stem) or behind his ear.
