This topic has come up before from time to time. Still much is unknown. Limited articles and photos. What's the story with the display case? Where are the Gallery Guns? Etc... This article connects W.I. King to Savage and the St. Louis exposition. Also connects him to Winchester which implies he did contract work as well.
Thanks for an interesting post! There is a 1899 that I saw years ago that has some modest carving on it & is marked WL King under the butt. An unengraved gun with a couple special order features. Perhaps one day I can buy it.... keep trying to, tjw
Wanted: Nice Fox Shotguns, SP(E) Skeet & Upland game a specialty. Looking for Savage Posters/Calendars
It was an interesting time for sure. By 1904 King had already carved a number of Savage rifles that no doubt had went to shows which Winchester and others would have seen. Who recruited who? Savage recruit King? Winchester recruit King?
1904 was just prior to Arthur Savage leaving Savage Arms so a lot was crammed into a short time period with respect to AWS.
At the risk of going down the Winchester rabbit hole I did crack The Winchester Book to see A-H grades of carving/checking. A & B were carved only.
Oops.. had a text I didn't see come through a while back.
King carved Winchester here.. Not sure who did the engraving. Fug?
