Does anyone know off-hand which front Weaver base is needed for a Remington 700 LA to mount a Leopold VX-III/Vari X-III. I currently have a M-6 scope on it and it has a shorter tube than the VX-III. The front base that I have on there is not extended enough to accomodate the VX-III 5-1/2” tube.

Get a rail instead of two-piece Weaver bases. Just be careful as some rails are wider than standard Weaver bases.

Weaver #36 rear, #35 front.
Can't believe that we old timers were ever able to mount a scope until Picatinny rails were invented. Today's generation of shooters has to have one of those big ugly mofos mounted on everything!

Is that an extension front base? Can turn it around for short tube scope, placing rings closer together.
I think that’s what he’s looking for.

Yes, that is what I need. I haven’t taken the M-6 scope off to see what base is on there now, but the slot is as far forward as it can be. I need at least another 1/4” to 3/8” to get 4.5-14 VX-III on there.

Paul Ain't that the truth..... SoTex, I use the 40A on the front for most scopes. Which VX-III?

IIRC, the 40A front base is the extended base and probably what the OP is looking for.

You are probably going to need the #40 then.

Paul The trouble with the #35 front is that a lot of modern scopes are shorter and don't fit well on a 700 LA (or length similar action). Weaver has refused to update their M700 front base to at least move the ring to the back of the front receiver ring. Here's some pics I took of some bases I use. I wanted a weaver style base that placed the forward ring to the rear of the front receiver ring w/o crowding over the loading port as does the extended Weaver #40A. The Leupold Rifleman bases were the ones I went with for general use.

I have some Weaver extended rings in my possibles box if that would help you. You can use whatever base you have and then turn the ring to extend rearward over the port, or forward over the barrel. If you are interested, I'll check to see what I have height wise. Pictures can be posted if you want to see one. I'll give you one if you can use it. Jim S.

Thanks for the replies guys. Jim, Thanks for the offer! I have been so busy these past several weeks, I haven’t been able to look around at my options. I will check into other bases, I guess, although I much prefer the conventional Weaver bases and rings. Thanks again.

While I have used plenty of Weaver bases, I prefer the Warne.

I like Talley bases and rings, they look great, never will slip.
