Has anyone had experience with the model M-10(1910) sporter in .280 Ross caliber?

There is a guy from Lincoln, NE, named Jim Foral (Forel?) who has done a lot of work with the Newton and Ross Rifles, so you might google him. IIRC, the 280 Ross uses a .288" diameter bore/bullet, so good luck finding them!

IIRC, the Ross can be assembled incorrectly - so that it is dangerous to the shooter.

Your memory is correct, the bolt assembly must be performed properly or the locking lugs will not fully lock into the breech, causing a bolt blowback upon firing. Ian, how long have you had your Ross M-10 & is the feel, fit & finish as custom as it appears? Have you ever reloaded for the .280 Ross?

While it is true that the Ross rifle can be assembled incorrectly, one has to really work hard at it! It is not easy to do, and there are plenty of clues along the way that something is quite wrong. Here's my Model 10 Sporter with English stalking pattern stock. I really need to remove those ugly white spacers from beneath the swivel studs. Ted

More importantly have you whacked a critter with this rifle? HBB

Almost everybody up here has shot and killed something with a 303, although most do it with a Lee Enfield. You think I should put that 6X42 Leupold on it? Ted

Yukoner, that Ross looks real nice. With the box magazine and .303 Brit cal., is your's the model R-10 rifle & does it have the 26" or 28" barrel?

Mine is the R-10, and has a new 26" Bevan King barrel with the correct 0.311 groove diameter. The original barrel was toast, the new one is just superb. King did a very fine job, the chamber is the correct size, with no bulged base or oversized shoulder. Brass lasts forever, even with 174 and 180s at well over 2700 fps! It is the most accurate iron-sighted rifle I own. Milk jugs at 200 yards beware! Ted

My Ross is a commercial sporter in 280. Yes the bolt can be put together wrong and I never would expect this gun to function in trench conditions. The Ross cleaned up at Bisley one year but this was becasue they were shooting the 280, not because of the rifle. The stock is quite slim and the floor plate is flush with the bottom of the stock. I have never seen sporters in 303 but that does not mean they don't exist. Most were cut down military rifles.

Ian, I'm partial to your model rifle. Ross did make several early & late model sporters in .303 British. The model 1903 sporter and the model 1905 E,R & M sporters were in that caliber. The 05 E model also in .35WCF/see Vigillinus posting. The model R-10 & E-10(1910)sporters with military box magazines also in .303 & .35WCF calibers.

Yukoner, there's a .35WCF Ross for sale on Auctionarms.com. See Vigillinus posting above for the link. It's a nice looking 1905 model.
