I've been looking for a 99 with a 20" barrel in .303S that I can still hunt with in the thick timber/swamps next season. I found one I may buy, my only hesitation is the gun is a little nicer than I'd usually take hunting. Anyway before I buy it, I am wanting to see if anyone here had one in more of a hunting/shooter condition that you'd like to offload.
A 99H is a Barrel Band and may be a little pricey, an 1899H is a take down and available in 303. If I wanted a hunter, which I did, get a 99F 303 take down. I got mine for $140 at an estate sale. I'm using it this year to complete the Savage Slam.
Yeah, me too. Unless you plan on using it as a crutch, pry barbed wire fences apart, or substitute it for a canoe paddle just hunt with the nice gun. Life is too short to do otherwise.
What Joe didn't tell you is that $140 Savage was bought at auction in 1922. He's old.

The one I'm thinking about isn't a barrel band and not badly priced. I'll probably buy it and hunt it. But there is no doubt it's going to get dented and scratched. I have two days to decide if I want it so thought I'd ask. I actually don't care if it's a H or not but I thought that would be the lowest cost ( maybe only??) option to get one with a 20" barrel without cutting one.

I have a 1914 1899H 303 Savage with a stock repair.
You could have it for what I have in it so it gets used. Back story: It was listed as a 30-30 with pics that did not show the crack. showed up and it's a 303 with tang crack repair. Cut a deal after it arrived and kept it
Well, I'm still a little confused whether it's an 1899H or a 99H? The 1899H is a take down with a lightweight barrel, and weighs in at a flat 6 pounds.I find mine a joy as a walk around rifle. The 99H is a solid frame with a medium weight barrel, didn't see a weight listed but I'd assume it's only a couple ounces at most. I don't have one to compare. Good luck with either, I really like the 303, I'm sure you will too.
Not all 1899H's are takedowns, btw. Most are takedowns.. but it was available as both solid frame and takedown. In fact the takedown option on 1899H's wasn't available until about 1911, much later than the 1899A or SR.

For whatever reason I like .303s but somehow I ended up with 3 99s in .303 and they all have 26" barrels. I'm also a big fan of .30-30s for the same unknown reasons. At least I like to shoot them, I haven't hunted with a .30-30 in a long time.
Looking through Mr. Royal's book, I see carbines ( I didn't realize this was the actual name for a model, although apparently briefly), Es, Fs, Gs and Hs all had 20" barrels when chambered for .303S. I'm still not able to identify all the models correctly on sight.

That would be an interesting contest at the next Savage Fest. Put out a table or two of rifles and have to identify model and serial range range from what you can see without holding them.

This fall I traded a rifle I had $575 in for a 75-80% 99H Carbine (without BB) in .303 with a Redfield receiver sight. It is a joy to cruise the woods with but, haven't found the buck to take yet. Hope you find yours soon.
