Today was a special day, I attended an invitation only gun sale, and I was able to purchase a couple very nice rifles at some really reasonable prices. I’ve drooled over Dakota Rifles for a very long time and never thought I would be able to own one, today I’m an owner. The Dakota is a model 76 chambered in the scarce .256 Newton. Now I’ve got to find some dies and some brass, it’s not looking to be that easy.... I also found a Sako short action .222 in really nice shape. She went home too. Passed up some other really good deals too, just didn’t have the funds. Heres a few pics. What do y’all think?

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.
Ain’t easy havin pals.

Thanks guys, I’m looking forward to putting both of these to use. Ive got to figure out how to get a hold of some components for the Dakota. I’m going to move that discussion over to the reloading section.

The Sako 222 is from the 1950s. I have one like it with the safety on the bolt. They are nice rifles. Congratulations on your purchases.

Lifted this from Shooters forum I would triple check the data though. Sounds like a copy of Cartridges of the world and Ken Warners Pet loads have some data A quick internet search didn't reveal a source of dies in stock. May take a while to assemble components and dies. I wonder if you could rechamber to a 280 ackley without setting the barrel back? https://www.shootersforum.com/wildcat-cartridges/68869-256-newton-buffalo-arms.htmlCartridges of the World, 10th Edition, page 116 Cases may be made by necking-down, reforming and shortening 30-06 cases. Yes, this is actually a 6.5mm, or .284" bullet, as measured by US standard of measuring diameter from the groove, rather than bore. Recommended loadings: 120 gr SP - IMR 4350 - 55.0 gr - 2980 fps 130 gr SP - IMR 4895 - 46.0 gr - 2900 fps 140 gr SP - IMR 4831 - 57.0 gr - 2890 fps 129 gr SP - Western Factory Load - 2760 fps _____

I don’t think the .280 would work being that it’s a 7mm. I do have a thought to ream out the chamber just a bit to the 6.5-06. I think that could easily be done, right? It would probably/ definitely hurt the value though. With dies, I’m sure I could creat some newton brass out of .270 or 25-06 without too much issue.

I bet you cant just ream to a 6.5-06 because I believe there is less taper on the Newton. Maybe a 6.5-06 improved of some sort, That said, once you get the trim dies and form dies and spend a little time making brass you could keep your interesting caliber rifle original and therefor more valuable. I bet that rifle is damn near a one off Dakota in that caliber.
