Since the weather's so nice, I thought I better get out there this afternoon and try to scare up a varmint.
Went to my long range shooting spot, and wandered around a bit trying to find the perfect spot. Set the FoxPro down and settled in, but didn't like where it was at, so I walked down the hill to move it, and back up the hill & sat back down.
I howled 3-4 times the first 10 minutes, then switched on the caller. Played a few wabbit calls, and after 20 minutes I was figuring the night was a bust. Switched over to a female howl on the Fusion, while I chimed in to spice things up. Still no action. Switched to a group howl for a bit, then lowered the volume to quiet.
I was fiddling around with the illumination, as it was getting dark, and found the battery was dead. Oh well, didn't appear that it would make any difference anyway. For the grand finale, I plugged in the pup in distress call and turned the power all the way up. After 4-5 minutes here comes a dog on the run on the opposite hill almost parallel to me. I quick cranked the scope up, but it got too dark, moved it half way back while I barked to stop him...BOOM....KAWUMP! Dead dog!
Gathered up all my stuff, walked down the hill, picked up the caller, and up the hill to the dog. For some reason, I was expecting it to be a female, but when I flopped him over, he had the biggest set of nuts I've ever seen! Should have heard them clanking as he was running in. Sorry, I didn't take a nut shot........
Good call getting out before the crowds, everyone with enough scratch for an Ecaller becomes a coyote educator around here as soon as deer season ends. I managed to educate a dumb one on my way home from work today, he just stood there in the open looking like a fool until I sent him a 25 grain diploma. He ain’t getting any smarter.
It's not the callers, it's the dog "hunters". At one time there were 4 different groups that I knew of, all pounding the same areas. They're out at first light looking for tracks, then get on the horn to call in the troops. They drive in every field possible, permission or not.
Good example. Last year I spotted a coyote in the middle of a section. I drove to the west side to get the wind right & hide the truck. By the time I got over there, I saw the 1st truck, then 8 more out of nowhere. Drove to the south end and saw 3 trucks already 4 wheeling across the field in the middle of the section. I left.....
I've had them drop dogs on coyotes I was sneaking on too.
Very nice aalf! You kill any bucks with those 80’s?
Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.
