I had a friend gift me a lyman rifle last week and I'm looking for information on it. I've never shot black powder before and knew absolutely nothing about it until he gave it to me and I started researching the subject. I dont believe it is any of their current models and think that it's a plains rifle but would like opinions. All ot says is cal.50 black powder only. Made in Italy. Lyman middlefield, Conn.
I'm guessing its serial number 54737.
He gave me a box of .490 round balls but not sure what patches to get for them and if I should get pre lubes patches you lube them up myself. He also gave me some FFg powder. As soon as I figure out how to add pictures, I will.

Looks to be a percussion Lyman Hawken, not a Plains Rifle.
I would get some pre-lubed patches around .015 in size to try first. You will also need some percussion caps to ignite the FFg charge.
Make sure you give it a good cleaning first, including the nipple where the caps go. Remember black powder is corrosive so clean well the same day after firing. Plain hot and soapy water works, as does products like like butches black powder cleaner. Apply a little oil inside and out after cleaning with hot soapy water. Run dry patch through it before you shoot again to remove any oil residue. Black powder and oil don’t fare well together.

I have basically the same rifle, made by Investmentarms in Italy. Mine is not branded by Lyman though. It’s a well made rifle and if you follow the links and advice given in above post I believe you will be most pleased.
