kay, the atf rumor is true. winchester had to redesign the chamber assy by adding a spring loaded pin to the back of it, to push it away from the bolt when the bbl was removed.

If you are referring to a non takedown its not worth much around here., 300 to 400 in good shape..

Model 25?

Ok! That makes perfect sense now why that pin was there. Worked on bunches of 50’s. Apparently later models. . Never could figger out how it could fire without bbl in receiver with that whole chamber sliding forward. LOL.

Right before I had to leave shop with had 4 used 50’s in inventory. One was a 20 ga. best I remember. I thoight about buying one. But they just didn’t have the condition I wanted. They were cheap enough. Nobody really wanted them.

Thanks for the followup! I suppose I could have done a little research myself! LOL! Do appreciate it.

I remember seeing a picture of the the Super X Model 1 a year before it came out. We had a lot of Winchester employees as members of my gun club and one had the picture.

I've got an 1893 pump. Not real pretty to look at, but it's old.

Just not here - Shotgun World has quite a few, like the guy trying to sell his 90 some Model 42’s without depressing the market price. How does he get his wife to go along with this? How does he store & curate that? How often do you clean them?

Me? 3 Model 97, 3 Model 12, 3 Model 37 Winchester single shots. None true beauties. They’re there to go Bang!

I’ve got a 59 I got for $12. All I need is a barrel and a buttstock! smile

I killed a pile of pheasants one winter with a M12 a buddy bought with some kind of big old doinker choke on it when we were in gunsmith school. I bobbed it right behind the choke apparatus, soldered a ramp on it that I drilled for a bead and killed the heck out of the birds with it, 24” cyl bore.

Know an old fellow with one of the very last 97s made, in minty shape no less. I tried and tried to buy it to give it a life of adventure in the pheasant fields and dove ponds but he won’t let it go. I honestly wonder if it’s ever been fired.

Kaywoodie tell me about the Rem 81 in your pic. I’ve long wanted one and a friend has willed me one but I hope he lives long enough that I forget about it before I inherit it.

Kid,

That Model 81 is a .300 Savage and it belongs to my youngest son (as does that Model 94). His older brother gave him the 81 as a graduation gift (I think from grad school). It is a nice old rifle. I have one out in the shop however it is missing a few parts. They are neat old rifles. I just don’t like chasin’ the brass! LOL!

I had a really nice one back in the 70’s in .35 Rem.

Did you ever see the cool old licenses I found in the buttstock of an old ‘97 we bought at the shop one day? I’ll see if I can find that pic and post it. I’ve posted ‘em here before.

Here are those licenses!

I usually was the one that worked on the stuff of 1897 vintage so I got to get the old gun cleaned up for resale. I thought they were neat. We were always finding duck stamps, licenses, and such in the stockbolt holes. I’m sure you did too.

Very neat. I found a few duck stamps and hunting licenses and even a $100 bill in stock bolt holes over the years but always in a customer’s gun so I returned all of them. I know a guy who found an OK hunting license in the stock of a Rem 11 that was older than any the wildlife dept had in their display, they wanted it badly but I don’t recall if he ended up parting with it or not.

I recently was given a bunch of old gun stuff when a guy was cleaning out his dad’s gun room. In it I found about a dozen “deer gunning licenses” from the 40’s 50’s and early 60’s. He didn’t know they were in there but I gave them back to him, had about 20 years worth of the old man’s civil service performance evaluation forms and pay stubs too. I gave all that back but did end up with about half a dozen or more Springfield bolts and milled bottom metals.

Just noticed that dentist on your licenses didn’t age much, only two years between 1925 and 1929! Fountain of youth! smile

KW,
Sorry for the delay in replying. I had to work this weekend. I know exactly what you're talking about with the bags of parts! I think I bought a couple of guns that way...or at least that's what I told the gunsmith! I sure wish we'd had Youtube 30 years ago! I like the 97 for the gun it was at the time. But as soon as the Model 12 hit the street, it was old news. I really can't believe Winchester continued producing it for so long. The only one I have left is a Black Diamond Trap gun that I've always been partial to. Mostly because I like to look at it, rather than shoot it. Great discussion going on shotguns!
