I always use one, have an old MTM guide that fits most centerfires. Depending on the weapon I have will to search to find one. Possum Hollow I have used and several rimfires that are specific.

Surrendered the others and use Possum Hollow for each of my rifles. Like them.

Universal ones are only so-so at best. The Possum Hollow ones are about the best without going full custom like a Lucas or similar.

I don’t clean a rifle without a bore guide, possum hollow are great, most of mine are Sinclair, Bruno’s or possum hollow, most are basically the same. Delrin with an O ring. I don’t care for the metal or plastic guides that other places sell

Mike Lucas’ guides are my favorite. Someone needs to pick up where he left off. Maybe Possum Hollow will start making a version like Mike’s, which accept the insert.

I didn't mean to suggest I don't use bore guides, have a variety of guides, but liked the look of the PH guides. My birthday discount at Midway is on and I need a guide for a this new rifle plus thinking about buying some PH guides for some other cartridges I shoot a lot.

This may seem odd, but have yet to see any signs of visible thoat-wear in any rifle cleaned numerous times without a bore-guide. This goes back to the days before we were told how necessary a bore-guide was to accuracy. Took a long look through my Gradient Lena Hawkeye afte buying ir 15+ years ago.

Way back when I tried to clean barrels every 20-25 rounds, just like everybody said it should be done, because that's what benchrest shooters did. Eventually discovered most rifles would go a LOT longer between cleanings, and still shoot great.

I have one Lucas bore guide for my 6 PPC, works awesome but the insert is just added fluff that really does nothing special

The inserts closely match the various diameters of your cleaning rods. They allow for a much tighter tolerance between the rod diameter and the rod guide ID. The insert can be slid over your rod before you put a patch or brush on your jag.

Can't remember exactly what I was asking about, but I sent the Possum Hollow guy an email (his email address is listed on the "contact us" portion of his website) with a question about one of his bore guides over a year ago. Never received a response.

Sinclair for me.

The guide’s job it to guide the rod and prevent it from rubbing on the throat. One instance where the tighter tolerance is particularly relevant is when cleaning rod diameters are closer to rifle bore diameters.

Mule Deer, even if you don’t like bore guides you have to admit they keep the solvents where they are supposed to be, solvents always seem to get where it’s not supposed to be without one

If you're talking about the white delrin guides with o-ring from Sinclair, they're Possum Hollows. And yes, Mr. Sinclair who owns Possum Hollow might as well not have an email address listed. I did eventually get him on the phone to order a couple though and got them promptly.

boatanchor,

Keeping solvents out of the action is exactly why I use bore guides.

I was simply pointing out that I have yet to see any sort of throat-wear due to cleaning rods in barrels where rod guides weren't used, often for many years. In fact that's one of the things I looked for after buying a bore-scope over 15 years ago. Yet even a slight amount of throat erosion was plainly visible.
