1963 It's a 22 Magnum, or at least it was.

If it says .22 cal it was a convertible, at least at one time.

Frame will just say 22 cal even if it is a Magnum which the SN indicates it is. Mine is stamped .22 Cal. The cylinder does not say .22 Magnum like on the convertible models. When the 3 screws were made, they made them in 22 lr or 22 magnum.

Colt scouts barrels were marked 22 lr for 22lr only
22 mag for 22 magnum only
and 22 cal, for a 2 cylinder gun.
Don't know if ruger did the same.

Yes, it does have a prefix. There's another on GB without, that is also marked .22 Cal. See what Ruger has to say about the OP's SN: https://ruger.com/service/productHistory/RE-SSixMM.html

Yes, I think I misunderstood your post. I knew, and he was already told, this is common with the 3screw SS 22 magnums.

I have a old model but was built in a transitional year. Its a 3 Screw with a new model prefix and number.
Maybe yours falls in with mine?

Watch4bear: I have just purchased (earlier this week) a very nice condition Colt Frontier Scout with the marking on the barrel "22 Magnum". It came (at a pittance of a price!) with just one cylinder marked "22 L.R." Do you think it will be safe to shoot? Appreciate any opinions or information. TIA Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Mine is #3243xx made in 1961 and is marked as 22 Mag. The serial # you're looking at falls on this list. https://ruger.com/service/productHistory/RE-SSixMM.html
