Same up here I sold a toy hauler several years back dude paid me 12k cash. Cool.. guess I should put it in the bank I figured. Well I got it in the bank but not after having to declare how I got it, from whom, sign here.. yada yada. The gal at the bank apologised and said anything over 10k by law they have to do a lot of extra paperwork.

The government begins with the theory that the only way they can control you is to control what you spend, and where you spend it. You should probably spend it before they move to the next phase of controlling our lives.

Aside from the obvious trepidation so many of you feel just mentioning this topic, can you believe what the hell has become of America? I was taught as a lad to save money! Who knew the government would get to the point where you are suspected of criminal behavior if you saved money outside a bank? Crazy!

And no, we're not talking about large amounts of cash, we're talking about ANY cash that's not from a bank account. At least that according to the mortgage people I'm talking to.

Open several accounts with $9000.00 in them. Then write a few checks for the down. Just like the illegal immigrants, and pot growers in most of the country. They seem to get it done!

If the cash is legit, go deposit it. If it’s side income that wasn’t reported, use it for things that can’t be traced. Like groceries.

That will get you in bigger trouble.

The only thing foolish here is to get online and blow about keeping stacks of cash in your home.

Most people assume nowadays anyone with a little cash set aside must be illegitimate? Nobody saves cash? Go to the bank cash a check, deposit part of it, save some in cash?

Had the same thing happen to me, I guess I fall into the idiot category too!!

I need to sell a few reloading supplies I'm not using. What is the latest government approved form of payment? If I get a postal money order how do I know the buyer isn't laundering his illegal cash to buy my old bullets? Should I report him to the government? After all, he paid cash for the money order.

If it’s legit money, go deposit it.

Why? I like having access to cash for impulse buys. They don't take checks at yard sales.

Well, for one you could use it for legit purposes like a down payment?

I think one should deposit it in a bank.

The best reason for keeping it in a bank is that in general, if you have a bank account, it is fully insured up to a certain amount of money. If somebody robs your safe, you're [bleep] outta luck. If somebody robs the bank, it's insured to like a hundred grand or perhaps a quarter million, depending.

Secondly, security. A bank has a huge ass vault with cameras out the wazoo, and a metric crap ton of alarms. Anybody tasked with moving even a fraction of it does so carrying a gun and driving an armored vehicle.

But also, having it in a bank makes it easier to invested. Uninvested money does not grow beyond what you save. But if I put 2 grand in a Roth IRA and put it in the market, it could be worth double that within ten years without any additional investment on my part.
