Anybody have any experience with the Remington 783 Varmint in 308? I am wanting to pickup a cheaper 308 and this pretty much fits the bill for what I am looking for. Just looking for some real world experience with this rifle.

They're a good deal, .....some think it's a better action than the 700. Haven't heard any complaints on accuracy, and mine shot under 1" out of the box!!

Everything I've read about them has been really positive. I think many correlate them as an updated version of the 710 which is incorrect. Looks like a rigid receiver which similar features to Savage.

I was under the impression the 783 was a modified Marlin X7, seeing how some of it's parts interchange.

I have a Marlin X-7V, 22-250 which has been a great shooting gun. Its gonna need a new barrel after the next round of shooting prairie dogs tho.

783 is basically the same gun.

My dad has a 783 and the barrel fouls severly. It will shoot good for a max of 15 shoots before groups open way up.
If I wanted a cheap rifle I would go Ruger American.

My goto choice in econo-rifles remains the Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard. Often found at around $400 or even less from a few vendors, they feature forged steel actions, forged one-piece bolts, and no MIM or sintered parts that I've found so far. A bit heavy, but with solid bones that won't lose bits and pieces at odd moments like some others do. In addition, they have good two-stage triggers, decent, if not fancy hinged floorplates, and maybe the simplest bolt take-down in the business.

The Howa versions are also available as barreled actions from Brownells for those who might want a different stock and don't want to pay for a throw-away. A number of barrel contours are offered, but apparently and sadly, the LW action seems to,be no more.

I may be an old fussyman, but a 783 I saw in the rack at an LGS remained untouched after a quick glance. Tastes vary, of course, but this one ain't for me.

One advantage of the RARs seems to be that the sometimes troublesome rotary mags can be replaced with single stack .450 Bushmaster mags, at least for the .308 family. Factory mag options for the various RAR models are pretty wide, it seems.

Didn’t know about this particular model Savage. Will definitely check it out.

I have had savage 10fv in 223 and 6.5 creed. They really are fantastic shooters for the price with decent triggers. I may buy another one at some point for fun. I scrubbed the barrel with jb bore paste for a while to polish it up cleaned it, bedded it in the factory stock and it would shoot legit 4” groups at 600 yards. Good guns especially for the price

So other than the detachable magazine and funky looking stock the actions are very similar? I am thinking of getting a 783 in 450 Bushmaster for a Michigan deer hunt next year.

Same trigger group mostly. The barrel nut. Barrel threads.

So, Remington copied the barrel nut and barrel tenon specs from the Savage 110 series?

I have one chamber in .243 and I'm happy with it. Pretty damn accurate. Not a looker but it shoots just fine.
