Anyone a fan of Hornady superperformance .300 savage? I had a problem with a blow up of a deer with corlokts so I am looking to switch and was wondering what the cult followers of .300 savage had to say about it in their savage 99s

Since 300 Sav and 308 Win are very similar I'll throw in my 2 cents. I shot an elk with a 99EG in 308 with super performance 150 g. ammo. It penetrated nicely at angle through the ribs and devastated the lungs. The distance was probably a little under 150 yds. The elk went about 50 yds and dropped dead.

I shoot the Hornady Superformance from my 1945/46 99R. Deadly accurate and dropped a nice fat Wisconsin Whitetail Doe with a High Shoulder shot at about 75 yards this fall. She dropped like a sack of hammers, as the bullet did its job. Looking forward to trying the Hornadys in the 250-3000 next.

What is a blow up?
I've shot dozens of big game animals with 150 grain cor loks in both 300 and 308. Never had a failure.
If the bullet hit something really hard like a shoulder or hip it could do tremendous damage to meat, but you really can't blame that on the bullet.

I was thinking along the same lines as Randy. One time I shot a deer through the shoulders and it blew the off shoulder to jelly. I just don't use that shot anymore.I do have one box of Remington 180 GR CL's. I expect they will go through 3-4 deer and not expand much.
Don't pay any attention to me, I'm just bored. I'm saving those 180's if I ever take the "K" bear hunting.

'Blowup' typically means superficial wounds, which means the bullet didn't make it to the vitals.
A bullet that stops on the shoulder is not a bullet I'd want to use.

The only blow up I ever had was with my 99G shooting 303 Savage Silvertips. Round hit the left front shoulder and failed to penetrate. Another hunter in a different camp that I know killed the deer when it crossed his blind and I came down latter that day to look after someone said he shot a deer with a very messed up front left shoulder. It was my deer and the shoulder had only surface wounds with no penetration. I heard latter that Winchester Silvertips had a tendency to blow up if they hit bone. Hard to believe at 303 Savage velociity.

I tried 308 superformance in two different 99's , both had very sticky extraction. I think I still have that box with 18 left in it around here.

It is extremely accurate out of my Remington 722 in 300 Savage.

A bullet that stops on the shoulder is not a bullet I'd want to use. Was looking for his definition of the word If it smashed both shoulders and ruined half the meat on the deer and he termed this a "blowup", that would be something different than what your definition is.

I have a nearly full box of W-W 150 grain .30 Silvertip bullets if anybody wants them. Free, for postage. They just don't shoot as well as I would like in the .30-06's I tried them in, and my .300 (yes, I own but one .300- when it comes to big rimless .30's I'm a .30-06 man) much prefers 150 Sierra spitzers which is what I feed it. Hit me up.

I like the hornady super performance ammo. I have used it in the 300 and 308 caliber 99s. It is accurate and worked great on the deer

It is extremely accurate out of my Remington 722 in 300 Savage. Is that you Joe? I replied that I agreed with you, never had a "blow up", as we would define it,"disintegrate on impact". Added the part about the penetration destroying the off shoulder just in case that's what he meant.

I remember when I first joined the campfire, I was on a mission to save elk from getting wounded by bullets in 30 caliber under 180 grains.
Well you all educated me, and through the years I have come the conclusion that for me and my hunting style. When using a 300 savage. I most often prefer the 160 grain FTX Hornady bullet made for the 308 marlin express. It is awesome in loading, crimps perfectly on the cannulure, has a boat tail, rubber nippy tip, and likes leverlotion as a propellant!
Terminal ballistics on cow elk ( Rocky Mountain) , and whitetails have been impressive.
If one shoots into the shoulder with a bullet at a velocity above let's say 1800 fps , one should expect damage. If you want to " eat the critter right to the bullet hole." ...I would reccomend a 45/70 , 45 LC, 44 R.E.M. Mag, 444 or perhaps a 38/55 with very heavy bullets.
Archery also allows " eating to the hole!"

Using Superperformance in my 308 EG makes the lever a little sticky. It's extremely accurate but I'm not going to shoot many Superperformance in it. But it sure killed that elk.
