I've got a few new shooters coming into view in the next couple of years. Thinking I should start setting aside a few bricks of 22 lr ammo a year. Where are you folks finding ammunition deals?

dye,

There's a site called ammoseek (I believe it's called) that you can check for the best ammo deals.

I usually buy from target sports, if you buy a case the shipping is free, which is a big deal out here on the west coast.

I don't know how much you are into 22 LR or your budget, but if you shoot a lot of 22 LR and somehow can swing it, I would look more at getting a case(s) as opposed to a brick here and there. Picking up a brick once in awhile is a good strategy if you are buying local, but shipping generally kills the beauty of buying off the internet. There are exceptions, such as sometimes Brownell's for instance will have free shipping.

Our local Walmart has the 500 rd bulk packs of Win Expert HV 22LR HP priced at $16.70 - this is the plain lead bullet stuff - not plated.

Pursuit may be, it seems to me, perfect without possession.

You could do a lot worse than to shop for a good deal on a case of CCI SV and then jump on it. Consistently decently accurate, and always goes bang, IME. Don't waste time with crap ammo.

There are tons of options for ammo right now, with prices lower than they've been in years...

As others have said, buy cases, not bricks. You'll save money from buying in bulk and also get free shipping on many sites.

CCI Standard Velocity, is a popular, low cost ammo as is Aguila SE.

SK Standard typically shoots very well for a few dollars more...

YMMV

If you buy case quantity her there is free shipping. Plus they are one of the few places to ship direct to homes in NY.

My feelings also, You can not go wrong with CCI Standard Velocity for accuracy. Yes, there is ammo that is more accurate & consistent, but nowhere near the price CCI SV goes for.

However, I found a deal (thanks to the fine folks on this forum) for CCI AR at an incredible price early this year... I only regret I did not buy more. I use it for shooting steel in my pistols.

dye,

Not a member... if I was still into competitive shooting I would consider it as I would be trying different ammo and different lots of the ammo that my gun(s) liked. I usually just try to find a box at a dealer here to try for compatibility before getting case quantities. The problem with this method is that there is a lot of ammo that I can not find locally.

Same round, different packaging.

The 50 round boxes are what I bought.

Besides general plinking, a lot of folks use this round for low cost target practice and save the expensive ammo for matches.

For general plinking, shooting at steel or anything that does not require much precision bulk pack ammo might even suit your needs. But I feel you pretty much can not go wrong with CCI SV.

Kind of ironic, me telling you that bulk pack might possibly work for you... my only recent regret buying ammo was buying bulk pack for general plinking and not just buying more CCI SV instead.

i wait until brownells puts the cci standard on sale. Got 2000 rounds for 75 bucks shipped once with coupons and free shipping. Just have to watch out for it. They do this a couple times a year and then I load up.

CCI S/V is without a doubt the "best bang for the buck" standard velocity ammo available. Another favorite of mine is SK Magazine, it is a bulk packed standard velocity ammo and can often be found for $40 - $45 per 500. It does shoot slightly smaller, more consistent groups but it is also nearly twice the price of CCI S/V.
In my experience they both shoot much better than their price range would indicate and they both shoot well in any reasonably accurate rifle.

Been setting 2LR ammo aside for years. Followed the advice my granfather gave me many years ago - "Whenever you're in a gun shop buy a box of ammo." Carried that recommendation over to 'whenever I was in Wal-Mart . . . ' and now I have oodles of cheap 22LR plinking ammo. Several boxes (bulk packs that have $4.88 and $8.88 price stickers on them. grin

For the higher end stuff, I use AmmoSeek to find the best deals. As mentioned, Target Sports w/free shipping typically gets the nod.

For case quantities, targetsports.com ( free shipping on case quantities).

For less than case quantities, look at Brownells. Typically free shipping on over $50 orders, and often a 10% discount.
