I'm purchasing a muzzle brake for my new 300 win mag. I had one on a previous 300 I had but picked it up used. I am wanting to know about size related to performance. I would like to get one and turn it down to where outside diameter is seamless with the barrel contour. The ports and their size would be exact same. Will turning the outside diameter down effect the function of the brake compared to leaving it larger in diameter?

Harrells muzzle breaks, $35 delivered and have to be machined as you describe....turned down, bore out to caliber.

I also like the Gentry "quiet" muzzle break that is not the same dia as the barrel, and they throw the sound 15* forward putting a lot of concussion off the shooter.

The side discharge muzzle breaks are perhaps more efficient, and they are much louder.

I learned to wear electronic ear muffs when deer hunting. I use a grunt and rattle call for bucks. Deer snort wheeze and grunt much more than I could have ever believed before I started wearing the electronic ear muffs, now I "Hear the Hunt".

Just buy a KDF in the proper size - and you won't have to then turn it down to match... FWIW.

^^^^^ This ^^^^^

I have KDF brakes on my .300 Weatherby Vanguard and my .375 RUM. I've used both rifles on multiple international hunts, and wouldn't think of shooting them without their brakes.

www.muzzlebrakesandmore.com. he will taper or turn brakes to your barrel size. There are several testing videos on the site comparing various brakes.
Side port brakes are most effective, but also the loudest
