It's good to finally see an enlisted man so honored.

There have been more than a few military ships named after enlisted men.

There have been more than a few military ships named after enlisted men. And rightly so for sure, but a CV is a big honor.

Quite an honor to have any ship named for you. Carriers are typically named for Presidents or such. Enlisted usually get a Destroyer named for them. I think its great.

I'd rather see it named after Ensign Jesse L. Brown U.S.N. It would be more appropriate.

Saw this on the news, thought it was pretty cool. Jumped on a gun he wasn't trained to shoot till he ran out of ammo. Didn't hear if he had much family, hopefully so.

There have been more than a few military ships named after enlisted men. Petty Officer Miller has already had a ship named after him prior to this. A Knox class frigate (FF-1091) renamed from a Destroyer Escort (DD-1091). They should have named a new Arliegh Burke class destroyer for him. That class are named after Naval Heros. Carriers should be named after presidents, if of that class (Naming one Stennis is abomination no matter how much he did for the Navy), or for American ideals or prior ships of the line (Enterprise, Ranger, America, Constellation etc.) No disrespect meant towards Petty Officer Miller, a very worthwhile Naval Hero and he should be honored by having a new warship named after him but to break tradition and make it a CVN bothers me as not honoring tradition but breaking with it in naming ships.

So by that logic the Nimitz should be a FF or DD, and not a CVN?

That tradition regrettably died quite a while back. Battleships were states Cruisers were cities Carriers were famous battles or historic ships Destroyers were individuals Submarines were fish.

So by that logic the Nimitz should be a FF or DD, and not a CVN? Yes. I've sailed on her and have a few traps on and a fine CVN she is. The last 5 star admiral and a man to be admired in many many ways for many many things but I do believe that if the follow-on ships were to be named for presidents then the lead ship in the class should have been too. Frankly, the Brits generally do a better job than we do in Carrier names right up until they named the current Queen Elizabeth - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aircraft_carriers_of_the_Royal_NavyA real honor for Petty Officer Miller would have been to name an entire new class of ships for him. Perhaps only limited to those that earned a Navy Cross and MOH when we replace the current Arleigh Burke class.

They named it after him because just like Nimitz, he was from TEXAS!

I'd prefer publicly funded works were not named for people, but if you're going to name it for someone he seems like a good one.
I wonder if I'll live long enough before we read about people without a designation of race.

Glad they dedicated it to him instead of Obama Call of Duty franchise had the carrier USS Obama...it was destroyed and sunk in the game.
Don't ask me about my military service or heroic acts...most of it is untrue.
