KOA campgrounds are generally expensive!

probably not my first choice either. would like to stay in State Campgrounds, but they are far off the beaten path.

It might help if you mentioned what part of the country you're planning on camping in.

Pulling a trailer/camper?

Usually find a truck stop or gas station to pull into. I wouldn’t pay KOA style fees just to sleep for 8 hours or so.

I gotta real twist for ya. If ya can pop for $4.....

North of Tampa and just south of Westly Chapel 75 and 275 split off.
75 heads SE and goes out around Tampa and the reconnects with 275 south of the bay, look at your map.

If you take 275 there and go due south right through Tampa/St.Pete you can get onto the Old Sunshine Skyway "Fishing Bridge" and camp for dirt cheap, you'll be out over the bay, it's pretty cool. No hook-up or anything but it just costs a few bucks and there is great fishing right from the door of your rig.
It don't amount to much but there is bait tackle and bathrooms...

When you leave just jump back on 275 and continue south and you'll be back on 75 in a jiffy and soon rolling into Ft. Myers.

The following is from their website:

When the new Sunshine Skyway Bridge was built over Tampa Bay, connecting St. Petersburg with Sarasota, the old bridge was turned into the world's longest fishing pier. Anglers love being able to park their cars or campers within a few feet of their favorite fishing spot. The bridge is lit at night, so anglers can see to rig a line, bait the hook, and get a good look at their catch. The light also attracts many species of fish after sundown. Common catches include snook, tarpon, grouper, black sea bass, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, sheepshead, red snapper, pompano, and many more.

Fees
$4 per vehicle, plus $4 per adult

Hours
24 hours a day, 365 days a year

Well,

they are a class above a Motel 6.

My wife and I sometimes use them for the Kamping Kabins as she will no longer do the tent thing.
Last one we went to was no longer a KOA franchise.

Good luck on your trip south.

Stay out of the Motel 6's.
