Brad: I like the gun; I've owned and shot a 270 WSM, and the 7mm WSM.I liked the 270; I think the 7mm got to me because I was shooting the Federal stuff with the 160 Partition at 3250(?!).The rifle felt like a 300 mag. I have never fired the 300 WSM in the Montana;only in the wood stocked model. I found the 300 WSM to be an accurate, easy-going cartridge, kinda like a short/fat 300 H&H.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

AllenDay,

I kinda wanted a 17-4gradeSS tube. From My knowledge WaltherLothar are the only folk that make such.If Im not happy with a buttoned tube, then I could get a smaller bore one and send it to Dan Pedersen to rebore, recut and chamber for $320.Thats not to bad a price.
Sounds like a bit of assin' about, but thats what ya gotta do sometimmes to get what you want, if one thinks its worthwhile.
You know I was talking with Darcy in Reno, but never actually picked up one his rifles!!.Strange or rather silly that.
Think I was mezmerised by some Mausers from another stand.
Anyways from all accounts, it sounds like your veryhappy with your Echols.270win with 2.25lb fill.
Maybe the Edge is better suited to a trim 6.5x55 m70.
This profile appeals to me.

Starman: What a beautiful rifle. What is it and who built it, if you don't mind my asking.

Bob,

I love that rifles as well. I especially like the what looks to be one piece made from scratch scope mounts. In any event I believe the rifle was built by Joe Smithson.

Starman,

Interested in your comments about the length & cost you would be willing to go to use 17-4 SS for a rifle barrel. Could you fill me in on your desired outcome & why 17-44SS? I am interested in the pros & cons of using one steel over another for barrels & fireamrs manufacture in general.

Regards,
Dave
