I have a pre 64 FWT 30-06 I am thinking of rechambering/rebarreling to a .358 Win, 9.3x62 or .284 Win. Other than a new barrel for 1 and 3 on the list would anything have to be done to the magazine. As far as the 9.3 goes would do you think there would be enough metal in the original barrel to just make it a 9.3?

You could do a JES rebore 338-06,35 Whelen or 9.3x62.I think he's charging $250 including return shipping.I had him do a 338-06 for me and it shoots great.

A fwt barrel has a muzzle diameter of .550 so a whelen or 9.3 is getting awfully skinny. It will also be a few ounces lighter than the same rifle as a 30-06, just something to remember. Rebarrelling to a 358 winchester or 284, you might have to have some work done to feed properly. (358 would be better off a 308 fwt I suspect)
Not many talk about it but from personal experience a 35 whelen with heavy bullets recoils noticeably lot more than the same rifle in a 30-06, just something to consider in the equation.

If you are talking a switch barrel setup, given the 70 barrels have an extractor cut... your. Barrels will need witness marks so you know they are turned back to exactly the same spot. (Talking about ONE line on the action that will line up with marks on each barrel so you know you are there.
In general you will probably require a good action vise & wrench setup, and should get go/ no-go gauges to double check the work.
WHATEVER you do - make sure the Smith laps the bolt lugs BEFORE the first. Barrel change... and doesn’t screw with the lug surfaces to help headspacing for the other barrels.....

The 30/06 is a VERY versatile cartridge/caliber - more so than the three other calibers you are interested in.

Yep, left it alone for several years now. Tried to sell it several times. No one wants it at a fair price. It's a 1.5 " gun at best with just about any bullet I put in it. So I can have it as a mantel piece or make it so I will use it. It's one of three 30-06's I have so I agree about the caliber.

If you went with the .358, from what I have seen, the extended Extractor Ring - for Short Cartridge Rifles would need to be replaced, and combined with the #4 ejector ( for the shorter .358 ). The ejector is a fairly easy find, the extended extractor ring - not so much. Something to consider.

9.3x62. The 30-06 is not rare and I would imagine that your rifle is not in collector condition if it did not sell for $650. Rebore, shoot the crap out of it and don’t look back.
