Would you put a swfa 5-20x50 HD on a Barrett Fieldcraft? I'd like to get more magnification then my SWFA 3-9x42 HD but the swfa 5-20x50 HD is almost 32 oz. Any great alternatives that would be lighter and reliable under 1k and track as well. Not a Vortex fan

That seems like an excessive amount of scope for one of the lightest factory guns on the market.

Would feel a bit top heavy I believe. I initially mounted a VX6 3-18x44 to mine, but downsized to the 2-12x42 for that reason.

With a gun that light, I prefer a lighter optic. Will feel more stable in your hand.

Going from the top end of 9 to 20 is a bit extreme dont you think? Where will you be hunting this thing that you will need 20 power?

My dilemma is I want to use it for competition in Light Factory Sporter Class and also to hunt. In competition I can use a max of 24x magnification. I'd like to get as close as I can to 24x without a huge weight burden, a happy medium. Maybe that won't be possible.

Based on your criteria, I answer your first question in the affirmative. Frankly, doing so accomplishes YOUR GOALS in a cost effective manner knowing you have a scope that WILL ACCOMPLISH exactly what YOU WANT.

Your listed criteria already provides a built-in set of answers for a lot of naysayers who will ask "Why would someone do "x"?".

If it accomplishes what you're wanting than that is all that matters in the end.

Would 18x be enough? If so have a look at the Bushnell 4.5-18 LRTSi

Two scopes, good pic rail and good rings and swap them out depending on what you're doing. 3-9x42 for hunting and big scope for competition. Easy to check return to zero.

Nightforce NX8

Gets your 20 power at 28oz.

Bushnell LRS 6-24x50 FFP at 27oz. I’ve ran one of these for 5 plus years and it’s been solid and dialed a bunch.

I wouldn't mind a scope like that on a dedicated target rifle with a long heavy barrel.

On a Fieldcraft I might be thinking the other way. Something smaller/lighter than the SWFA 3-9x42.

I don't know exactly what targets and range are in light factory sporter class. But I think I'd want a separate scope for that. Maybe a dedicated rifle too.
