I have a Marlin 783 that is great, and I would highly recommend. If I were buying another, I'd get a plain Henry lever or a Ruger American compact. Or if I stumbled across a Remington 597M. And maybe an old boat paddle stainless 7722M.

If Rugers weren't known for having extraction issues, I'd recommend them. Savage magazines are cheap, but have always worked for me. Replacement mags are cheap. Savage, Marlin and Ruger in that order. https://g4gguns.com/product-category-group/rifles

A limited sample, but after owning several other .22 Magums over the years, bought a Ruger American a few years ago at the local gun emporium, and it shoots a wide range of ammo better than any other I've owned--or borrowed.
A friend was so impressed after we went on a ground squirrel shoot one day that he bought the same rifle at another Montana shop, and it does the same thing.

For the price I could not pass.... trigger isn’t bad either. About 2.75lbs without changing the spring....
I am using a beat up 17HMR case as a snap cap and it’s tight in the chamber but it’s pulling it out better than my Savage 17HMR. Thinking I won’t have extraction issues.

Ran about 40 rounds thru it w/o a hitch. As normal the Hornady 30gr Vmax was accurate at 2250fps. Exactly 300fps slower than than 17 Vmax load in the HMR. Armscor 40gr JHP was accurate also but at 1900 and POI was like 4” lower... Extraction and feeding were perfect. Got to find/ buy some decent mounts as all I had was some junk Chinese rings for the dovetail.....

Why did you sell the Henry? I'm looking at the Henry pump and Ruger American. Forgot to address this.... I had the Frontier lever action. It was awesome (accurate and functionally perfect) but whenever I wanted to shoot a lever I grabbed the twin in 22LR.

Put me in the Marlin tube feed camp, 783/883. I have owned a few different .22 mags and since I never loved the cartridge would eventually move them down the road mainly because they weren't that accurate. Regret it latter and get to wanting another. The best two shooters I've had were both 783's. When I finally realized that around 1" groups were good enough for about anything I'm going to do with a .22 mag I bought a beat up 783 for cheap. Some lots of ammo have stayed under 1" at one hundred and the current bricks that I have will do around 1.25".
For the record my Ruger American .17 HMR does have extraction issues.

I also have a Ruger American HB 22 Mag.
It's NEVER failed to extract for me in several thousand rounds.
Had it ceracoated(SP?) and it's my wet weather "porch gun"
Got to keep the critters away from my bird feeders!
Mine likes the CCI 30 grain Vmax best.

Ruger standard SS american using speer gold points will shoot little bitty groups and expand nicely out to 130 yards in water. Cut 3 could off of the trigger spring and got rid of that goofy blade on trigger. Fun accurate little rifle.

Well......
I bought a RAR for $259.99 locally so we’ll see tomorrow... Excellent choice. I think you will be very happy with it. Mine was extremely accurate. Functioned very smooth as well. Can't beat the ruger rotary mag either..
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

After letting a couple friends use mine, they went out quickly and bought their own. One uses his religiously on yotes, with great success...

I’m seriously thinking about buying the RAR Wild one camo version in 17HMR..... Cerakoted and threaded....

I love the 77/22 but they are way more money and I had an early 17HMR and it didn’t shoot well. Probably an anomaly....

I am going to get me a RAR compact 22 wmr for scouting and riding on my 4 wheeler. They are some nice little rifles for the money and the mags interchange with what I already have.

Not spacers, but you can buy the long stock insert for about $35.
But the 12.5 wouldn't bother me. And would work with a heavy coat or life jacket.
