I have a RRA midlength and am wanting to use it for Hunting/range shooting/home defense (after my G20 clears the way to it!)...
I am wanting a good combination optic for it...was thinking about a Burris 1.5-6 Electro-dot for it. The 6x could be used for the range and hunting...and I could keep it at 1.5x for close range work and at home.

Does anyone have a 1.5x on an AR-15? Does it work ok for close range, quick focus targets...or do I need a true 1x optic for it to effective at close ranges. Just wondering how a 1.5x would be for quick target acquisition i guess?

Thanks for any info!
Sam

I like using an EOTech. If I need more than that, I use a Leupy Vari-X II 3-9x40 (at least until it breaks wink ).

1.5 is not enough differance from the 1X to even be noticed

It may depeend on the operator, I can shoot fine with both eyes open up to about 1.5x ( the lower the better) above that speed is affected.

I have used a 1.5-5 Leupold and they work just fine. My only complaint is if you have a front sight post. I must have a touch of ADD because that's all I can see is the FSP when using a low power scope.

When using an Aimpoint or Eo-tech the dot will sit on top of the FSP and is no problem don't know why the difference, maybe I needed a higher mount like a LaRue.

EOTech....designed to acquire small targets when time allows or larger targets when short on time.

I haven't tried one of those Burris 1.5-6x illuminated reticle scopes yet, but I think something like that would be a great set up for a defensive weapon. I have a Leupold Mk 4 QCT 1-3x14mm scope on a Bushmaster M4 type carbine, and it's at least the equal of the EOTechs I've tried at close range and superior to those at ranges beyond 150 to 200 yards.

I also have a DSArms SA58 Paratrooper with the side folding stock. I have a Leupold VX-III 1.75-6x32mm nonilluminated reticle scope on it. I don't think it gives up anything in terms of fast target acquisition to the others at close range, except in low light conditions. At longer ranges, the 6x option is a definite advantage over the others. Here's my DSA Paratrooper:

6x works fine up close for shooting, easy for me to find targets at 25 yards.

In the house I'd be scared to shoot the 223. It has excessive penetration. My 69s at 300yards penetrate a side by side frigde/freezer and keep flying. That woudl be scary in a house.

As to house range shooting, I can shoot plenty well by pointing and shooting. Just like close IDPA/IPSC targets there is not much need to aim to hit.

I have a mossberg 590 for the house.

If it's going to be used as a close up combat gun, you'll need a shorter optic that allows you to mount a back up iron sight. The Eotech or Aimpoint are short enough that you can mount a good back up iron site, like a type 40. The Luepold Mk4 QCT is an excellent sight, but is to long for back up irons. If it's a Mid range gun use the QCT if its a fast twist lr gun scope it. If it's a plinker and not a fighting weapon it won't matter.
