This is for 458 and Mule Deer. I have always been a fixed power rifle scope guy (several 4 and 6x fx ii), as I have no problems with with them (350 yard kills with a fx ii 4x33 with a 270 win) on white tail. The problem is Leupold seems to be exiting the fixed scope models from their line up. I blew it by not ordering the big bore model 3x20 mm from their custom shop last fall. I wanted to put the 3x on a new Winchester model 70 Alaskan in a 375 H&H. I called Leupold and was given no info on future custom shop scopes, and that late spring they (the custom shop) may be up and running. I also see the fx ii 4 and 6 powers are gone........sad. I guess I looked at too many old articles from Wayne Van Zwoll, and Bab Hagel on fixed power rifle scopes......lol. I just like them.....period. Any inside news from Leupold, as your info would be appreciated.

The Leupold Big Bore 3x20 is perfect for that rifle. Why not try to find a used one? I have a couple and they are amazing scopes.

Or look for a used 4x. I have a 4x Zeiss on a 375 and like it a lot. Worked great in Africa. If you like a fixed be patient and you'll find what you need.

Not exactly what you asked but a vx3i 2.5-8 has served me well.

What about the FX-II 2.5x?

I was going to put an old Kahles 3X on my 375 H&H but then someone beat me to it. Look around you should be able to find a Leupold 3X. The 2.5x is not much different either. Put them in a pair of quick detachable mounts and then a back up could be higher powered and ready to go.

I ended up with the 1.5-6x Leupold and they have been good.

The 3x is 2" longer than the 2 1/2x Leupold. I guess I'll have to go with a 2 1/2 Leupold, if I can't find a 3x. I just thought the 3x with the longer tube would be a better match for the 375 H&H action. Thanks again.

Here's one on Fleabay. Not sure if the reticle is to your liking.

Excellent choice. I know someone who's taken over 200 buffalo and hundreds of other game with that scope on a 375/404. I have a Leupold 1.75X6X32 on mine. Two trips to Africa and shots ranging from 25 yards to over 350 with no problems.

I prefer low power variables. Mine has had a Leu 1.5-5, a Kahles 1.5-6 Illuminated, and the 2.5-8 over the years all in Talley QR mounts. As Jorge said, shots from spitting distance to over 350 yards without a hitch.

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

Big scope on my .375 H&H SS Classic NH M-70, but it's great in low light. Zeiss Victory 1.5-6x42 T*.

Dirtfarmer, nice rifle you have their. Is that an after market barrel, and also what length is the barrel? One more question, what are the mounts and rings shown on your rifle? Thanks for the picture.

Chopped and fluted factory barrel, 21”. It was too heavy, IMO, but shot too good to swap out. Balances and handles much better

Warne QD’s on Warne steel bases. NECG irons, front is windowed fiber optic. Google NCEG.

janesvillejohn,

My .375 H&H (have only one right now) is a Mark X Whitworth Mauser, and has a 3x20 FX Leupold. Got the scope very soon after it was introduced, and have used it not only on the .375 but a .416 Rigby, with no problems.

The first scope I ever had on the Whitworth was a 4x28 Leupold Compact, which was really bout a 3.5x. It worked great too, but the click adjustments on the FX make it easier to zero. Also tried an expensive 3-9x made in Europe, which started malfunctioning on a safari, whereupon I replaced it with the 4x compact, brought along as a spare.

Had another .375 H&H for a while, a Ruger No. 1 Tropical, and used it both with an NECG aperture rear sight, combined with the standard factory front bead, and a 1.75-6x Leupold. Generally left the variable on 4x, if I recall correctly.

Took game from up close to 300+ yards with all the scopes except the 3-9x with no problem. With the irons the longest shot was around 225 yards, on a red lechwe in Botswana. No problem there either....

Based on reading about your Whitworth and scope choices, I put a Leupold 3x20 on mine. On my last trip to Africa I shot a Kudu with it at a lasered 240 yards. The Kudu was severely quartering and one step away from disappearing in cover. A lot about that shot got me puckered up, but it never entered my mind that I needed more magnification. The shot went in just behind the left ribs, took out the right lung, and broke the right shoulder. A perfectly mushroomed TSX was stopped by the hide.

Maybe I'm over scoped on my 375 H&H, bought thought it might be good for an elk out to maybe 400 yds ? 2.5x8 Leupold

I've owned four rifles chambered to the .375 H & H They have been fitted with 1" diameter tubed scopes such as the old steel weaver K-6 and very cheap Bushnell offerings. My current .375 H & H is fitted with a 3-9 X Bushnell Banner.and has served me well.

I haven't found any correlation between price and reliability.....fixed vs variable power.....only a bit of optical clarity. Put the scope you like on the gun and take it to the range.....caution.....there is a bit of recoil here.

Mule Deer. I found a used Leupold 3x20 with a post & plex reticle. I will be looking for another. I still think for large game a 2.5 through 4 power is more than enough magnification at the ranges I shoot at. . My self imposed limit is about 350 yards for elk or deer, and always try to get allot closer than that. For cape buffalo I would hope to be 150 yards at a maximum. I just can't stand the thought of wounding an animal and having it suffer a long slow death. If and when I go to Africa it will be with the 375 H&H, or the 416 Remington mag. The big rifles I own are a, 375 Winchester M- 70 Alaskan, and the 416 is a M-70 safari. The only variable power scope I have in on a M-70 300 Win mag 26" bbl, with a Meopta 3-9x40 meopro. My 270 M-70 westerner has a Leupold 6x36, but I may swap it out for a Meopta Artemis 6x42 that I have.
