I saw a post war R today that had pre war sling studs in it just like mine. Looked like they were mounted just like mine. Just a coincidence?

They sold the pre-war studs after the war for a while. I've run into them on late 40's and early 50's 99EG's. Ticks me off.

Sounds like somebody swapped them out right after buying the gun.

My 52 EG has pre-war studs on it. By the look of it they had been on it for a long time. Possibly installed when it was new.

Savage likely pulled out the boxes of prewar parts and stuck them on guns until the inventories ran out after the war. I don't think they cared as much as many here today care about creating careful typologies such as 99R, F, EG, etc... I think they cared more about selling guns and making money and stuck them together in any way needed for getting that job done. When you say "never say never" with Savage you really are saying that Savage just put guns together in any fashion the customer wanted (if requested) and that the catalog examples were just a way of organizing the 99 into general categories.

In 1946 the cost of the #4-A studs and detachable swivels was $3.45, the sling was another $2.65.

Pretty safe to say, in my opinion, that where seen on postwar EG's it was just people buying them and adding them. Could it be factory? Sure.. but does it really matter? It's a Savage part on a Savage gun, who screwed them into the wood isn't a big deal to me.

I just wish I could order a few sets now. grin

Would one of you be so kind as to post some pics of the different stud types? I have a 51 EG in 300 savage and am curious if the studs on it are correct. I have not yet mastered how to post pics and I really can't tell from David's book what, if any, should be on a 1951 EG. Thanks.

As far as I know there are only two basic stud types. The "post war" studs look like what you would get from Uncle Mikes. The "prewar" studs were made to work with swivel that had clips and are round in shape when you look at them from the sides. The holes in "prewar" studs are also larger than the Uncle Mikes variety.

Savage sold several different types of studs. The postwar 99R's had sling eyes on them. Sometime in the 50's they started selling Savage #7 studs, which I don't have a picture of right now.

But here are the studs that were on the pre-war 99RS, and could be bought separately up into the early 50's at least. In fact I see 4-A studs in 7/8" listed in the 1958 catalog. But you see them very rarely, and in fact I only recently became aware you could buy them after WW2. They are very, very uncommon.

Front and back look like this:

The swivel on the left here is a Savage swivel for these studs, the two on the right I think are Winchester Supergrade swivels. The Savage swivels are very similar to the Winchester Supergrade swivels in size and dimensions, but Savage has smoother surface and rounder edges.

The pre-war studs on my 52EG were added after it was purchased in 52, I'm pretty sure. The gentleman that owned it also added a higher front sight and a Marbles tang sight. He obviously was a hunter and shooter. Just wish I could find the correct swivels for the studs. When his family sold the rifle the sling were not found. mad The swivels above are real expensive for some reason. cry

Thanks guys! The studs on my 1951 EG are rounded when viewed from the sides and I expect were added sometime in its history. They are for the Uncle Mike style of take off swivel and the hole is small and tight with one of those. It does fit though, just tighter than normal.
Thanks again.
