that occurred to me just as I posted this. The silver part is tight in the brass part, but I can see chambering one of these and pushing the two pieces together with the bolt.

Training dummy rounds that work in a '03 Spingfield, Garand, and M1A? Any way to make a firing "blank" out of them?

Yes, they are 5.56/223 spent casings. However, they are about 1/2" longer than a loaded round. The "bullet" end is hollowed out about the size of a large rifle primer.
