I'm thinking about reshaping/slimming my 98 Mauser Bell & Carlson in certain places and also hollowing out the butt/forearm but want to make sure I don't take off too much material. My plan is to remove the checkering, reshape the cheek rest area and then repaint and seal. Is there a "shell" on the stock that you can't go past? In taking the recoil pad off it kind of looks like a shell with a different core. I'm not sure how these are built and I don't want to mess up.
What have you guys done in the past? What should I watch out for? It's an older model so might not be exactly the same as current models.

Thanks.
