Picked up a Remington XR-100 in .204. Thing shoots good, few spots in the blueing but pretty happy with it so far. It is wearing a Bushnell Elite 4200 8x32x50. Give me a little schooling on these rifles......tips or tricks appreciated!

My shooting buddy has the same gun - he shoots factory Fiocchi 32 grain ammunition - shoots between 3/8" and 5/8" @ 100 yards. PD killing machine !

Good to hear, I have several different factory loads as well as several different handloads that I use in a G1 and an H&R Handi (better rifle than I EVER expected) to try it with.

I have two of them, both rebarreled to different cartridges. They are a great platform for a very accurate target or varmint gun. Mine are now chambered in 22ppc and 20 VarTarg. Both shoot sub 1/2” five shot 100 yard groups, are are a prairie dogs worst nightmare.

Quick report, braved the wonderful Indiana weather for a couple hours, 35 degrees but dead calm, chambered up 3 different loads and set up a 100 yard target. All 3 loads shot better than 1"! I want to figure the trigger out, from what I am reading it is "factory adjustable" and it could use a lighter touch but other than that I am real happy with the rifle. Now for warmer weather to get the groundhogs out.

Fireballs, wildcats on the .284 case, and BRs. I haven't found a used one at a price that makes any sense but I sure wish I had a couple with each bolt face. Tom

Slickdually: I am down to just 5 (five!) XR-100's now. A member here sold me an XR-100 in 204 Ruger a couple years ago and last year came back after me to sell it back to him! I finally relented. The calibers I have left are: 204 Ruger (three of these) 223 Remington 22-250 Remington EVERY one of the XR-100's I own/owned and helped friends set up have shot EXCEPTIONALLY well! Personally I think it is/was the finest Colony Varmint factory Rifle ever made! I have done NOTHING in the way of accurizing any of the XR-100's I own/have owned - just shot them. And again I can't emphasize enough how well they shoot! If you can find any of the 35 grain Berger bullets for your 204 XR-100 I highly recommend that you try them. By a slight margin these shot THE BEST in all of my 204 XR-100's! Alas they are/were hard to come by in my neck of the woods and I switched to the second best shooting bullet for my 204's and that is the 32 grain Sierra Blitz-Kings. I am a GREAT advocate of the XR-100 for longer range Colony Varmint Hunting. I kick myself for selling my fourth XR-100 in 204 Ruger but have an eye out for them constantly as I peruse gunshops and gunshows in the west. I also kick myself for passing on an XR-100 in caliber 308 Winchester several years back. I hope you will be as happy with your XR-100 as I am with mine! Foolish that "Big Green" ever stopped making these superb Rifles! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy P.S.: I have posted this bit of information a few times in years past on this forum. With my Remington XR-100 in 223 Remington with Leupold 8.5x25 variable scope using Berger 52 grain bullets, LaPua brass, Federal 205 Match primers and H-335 powder I fired the "smallest" group (five shots at 100 yards!) I have ever fired with a factory stock, non-Remington 40X Rifle - that group measured .121"!

T O M: First off, "I" am NOT a contrary (I consider a contrary as someone who automatically disagrees with whatever anyone is saying!) but in this instance I have to disagree with you on your contention that "Fireballs don't feed very well". I have several Rifles in "Fireball calibers" including a Remington 700 Classic in 221 Remington Fireball, a Remington 700 VSF (Varmint Synthetic Fluted) in 17 Remington Fireball, a custom Remington 700 in 17 MachIV (the twin of the 17 Remington Fireball) these are all repeaters and "repeat" very reliably! Now in full disclosure I own a very rare Kimber of Oregon Ultra-Varmint in 221 Remington Fireball and this Rifle (as are ALL Kimber of Oregon Ultra-Varmints in all calibers) is a single shot. Anyway I use these Rifles for predator and Colony Varmint Hunting and again no problems in feeding, extracting or ejecting. Long live the Fireball line of cartridges (including the 20 VarTarg!)! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

I also have and have Rem 700s in 17 fb, and 20vt that are great repeaters. They feed and eject just fine. But they were designed specifically for those shorter cartridges. The bolt face is different from other Rem 700s. The plunger and/or ejector is in a different location. Also, I have a custom Sako rifle, built on a stock A1 action. It feeds and ejects the 221 fb just fine.

I'm glad you had better results than I did. Most of the time they were fine but both rifles, an LVSF in .221 and an SPS in .17 FB, would occasionally decide to spit out 2-3 shells via the top of the action when I'd try to push just 1 more into the magazine. I'm sure the problem with the sheet metal was very subtle but it with my guns it was pretty apparent. This only happened a couple of times per day with each so it wasn't a show stopper but it was irritating when it happened.

One of my favorite Varmint hunting rifles is built on a XR-100 action.........I had problems to solve though. the bolt face had a .250" hole for the firing pin so I had to send it off to GreTan to get the bolt bushed. had problems getting a Jewell trigger to fit properly.....etc. once all problems were solved this rifle shot 6" group at 1000yds as a 6mmBR AI

"the bolt face had a .250" hole for the firing pin"
That statement sounds like it belonged on the Democrap debate last night.

Don't know anything about Democrap debate, I could never sit through watching one of those without breaking my TV !!!!!!!! The bolt face was the truth, I tried returning it to the store for an exchange but apparently I bought the last one in existence. I should have returned it to Remington but sent it to Gretan instead to get the bolt bushed along with upgraded firing pin and spring
