It’s ok if you have a balcony room over looking the street, other than that, been there done that!

Be aware of the regs, of course. But that wouldn't keep me from packing if I thought there was a reason to do so.

I'd rather explain than get in a bind wishing I was packing. If you have a problem, it likely won't be at the parade, but going and coming. It's your call, your risk analysis assessment.

It does look pretty tame right now.

Bourbon Street itself is relatively okay - "relative" to going on Canal Street or environs where you might as well be stepping into an African country. Actually, an African country would be safer. Only time I've ever suffered random street violence was when we were attacked by a gang of "teens" 1 1/2 blocks away from Bourbon street and one block off of Canal, a few "grown up teen" police watched it unfold and did nothing. That was in the mid-80's so I doubt it's gotten safer.

That said, Mardi Gras on Bourbon street itself is an experience. Lots of boob flashing from second story balconies, lots of drunkenness, first and only time I ever saw a genuine classic flasher was at MG where a guy wearing only a trenchcoat was opening it up occasionally to show folks his goods. The police were fairly low key and definitely laissez les bon temps rouler, I have to hand it to them for that, and only intervened if someone was doing something which could get someone hurt. They will also break up the inevitable crowds that gather under the boob flashers since pickpockets are drawn to them like bees to honey.

Again, that was 35 years ago before internet porn so as far as I know they now have open orgies in the upstairs bars.

Hmmm, now that I think about it, I wonder if I can book a flight tonight...? wink

It was fun when I was in college, dont know that I would go now.

Walked around with one of those dual beer can helmets and a backpack full of beer.

From what I can remember, it was a good time.

I think you should give it a shot. I have done it a time or two, and it's interesting. Glad I did it, but don't need to do it again. Violence is comparatively rare. The times I have gone, I didn't carry. It's in my back yard. I typically leave the area during Mardi Gras just to get away from the crowds. My wife is a teacher and is off work, so it makes a great opportunity to get away. It is more of a family type experience in the Uptown and Garden District area. Once you get into the Quarter things get a bit livelier. On Mardi Gras day proper, it's after the parades when the Quarter gets crazy.

When I lived down there I would go to the parades in Metairie since I had friends there. We also used to go to the Endymion ball in the Superdome the Saturday before Fat Tuesday. Brother of a friend was a member of the Krewe. Best parties ever.

Saw the footage from the float accidents and was shocked at the garbage lying everywhere in the background. Total disaster.

I wouldn't spend a single cent there with those pigs.

Side note,

Be sure to get an handful of jerky at Bourgoues(sp?) Meat Market.

I just saw a fat guy show his boobs to the camera. One could make a solid argument that his wares were more attractive than many of the 'ladies' walking by.

A good friend and former AI of mine is now a SWAT cop in NO. He will be working UC in the crowds. They spot criminals and trouble makers and have a pretty cool bag of tricks for swarming the turds and removing them from the crowd very quickly w/ little fuss. He gives classes to the hotel and club security here on how to perform these techniques and makes major bank.

He moved to NO because his wife has dependent family there and lives for the day he can return to the west.

Mardi Gras is the perfect opportunity to see humans at their worse.

Told ya. It'll be worse after the parades.

By midnight, the streets will be covered with litter and beer cans, will smell like beer with some puke thrown in.

NOPD will start pushing them out at midnight, using their horses.

Clean up will be aggressive and it won't take long to have it back like it was.

Glad I"m home, not there.

BTDT, seen enough already.
