I’m picking up a vintage Sako Mauser in 300H&H tomorrow (been to waiting the three days required in the people’s republic of IL) and I’m wondering what loads you guys are recommending? Just punching paper for now, but accurate hunting loads are preferred. Thanks in advance!

200 gn Partition with Magnum or Reloder 26.
180 gn TTSX with H4350, Hunter, Reloder 23, Reloder 26 or Magnum.

180 grains bullets have worked fine on moose, bear, sheep & caribou. Started out with core-loks, then nosler partitions. It shot both of those quite well. Core-loks na. I have shot some federal TBT and they shoot good but have shied away from bullets with little plastic tips as they can get broken. In theory they superior but a 180 gr hunk of lead from a 300 H&H in the right spot is hard to beat. Mine is a old FN Sako from the 50's, whatta gun...bit heavy for sheep

Just reread your post... mostly off the shelf stuff for me, the handloads i have shot did well, but only shot target's with them, yer gonna like it

I have loaded for 2 300 H&H guns. The 4350 powders really worked good for me in both. Also try RL19. My Browning safari likes 69 gr with 180 gr bullet. No need to go heavier unless going after really big stuff, but the 200 gr bullets will work. Enjoy, it is a fun caliber and feeds like butter.

Is that a Garcia era gun? I don't know my SAKOS well, nice rifle and great cartridge.

Tejano, I heard back from the Sako collectors site....here’s the details... probably made in 1953 or early 1954.. they thought the stock had likely been replaced with a custom stock...

“Sako-Mauser serial number 1052xx is in caliber .300 Magnum (.300 H&H) and was booked for shipping to Firearms International (Washington, D. C.) on 23 February 1954. It was part of shipping lot 11104. A total of 90 similar Sako-Mausers in that same caliber were booked for shipping to Firearms International on that date.”

NICE, my browser wont let me access the Sako Collectors site, I have an old Sako L61R in 30-06, have been trying to find out the year it was made, with serial number 141xx says it may be a mid to late late 50's year model according to your serial number research, Thanks!

Gunner500,

Find someone to access the site...you have to “buy” the service. They have a base service for$10 gets you the year and maybe a bit more info, then another level at $20 and maybe another at $30. I think it might be worth the $10... although, I thought I saw a table out there on the interweb where you could just look up the more common models...

It’s my first Sako and I’m loving it... good luck!

Thanks Dave, BTW, H-4831 under either 200 or 220gr Partitions will make that old H&H sing a pretty song, it all I use in mine.

180 Partition and H-4350 should work. Accubonds work too.

This load is a bit warm giving loose primer pockets after 2-3 firings and it doesn't do this repeatedly. I likely will start working with RE 26 going forward...

What a sweet rifle! I passed on one of those for a great price (had a 2 3/4X Kollmorgan Bear cub scope, as I recall) at a gun show long ago. Wife 1.0 was with me and kind of giving me the hairy eyeball about buying it so I let it go. How we remember the ones that got away...
Mind sharing what you "stole" this one for, so I can feel extra sad ;o) ?
Congratulations!

Thanks for the recipes everyone.. I’ve been swamped and haven’t had any time to load or shoot it yet...

Trex, I don’t want to make you feel bad.... but I picked it up for $300... when I went to pick it up (after IL’s ridiculous 3 day wait) the guy who owned the gun store was there and saw that I paid $300... he had some choice words for his employee who priced it... I’m sure they made out ok, they probably bought it for a song from someone..

Don't get much better than that. They wanted more than that for the "one that got away" 25 years ago. Congrats!
