Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, 41, won 97.62 per cent of the vote for a second seven year term in office yesterday.

He was the only candidate.

Interior Minister Bassam Abdel Majeed said "This great consensus shows the political maturity of Syria and the brilliance of our democracy and multi-party system."

I wonder why Canada and the U.S.A. can't find a leader as popular with the people as that - eh? wink

because we have that whole "amendment" thing going for us and they don't have total control - yet - as much as they'd like to....

Only better vote-getter would be Kim Jong-il. Although at the rate Hugo Chavez is going, he might be in the race.

Vernon, I, too, am puzzled.

Is there something in their soil that yields these numbers? Might it be Bulls**t or Horses**t? I just don't know.

(Thanks for this post! Sport, we must be doing something different. whistle)

(Yes, I know your name isn't Vernon. Vernon just brought back old memories of a good, but deceased cousin who might well have made the same post.)

Hugo'd be battin a 1000 if it weren't for those guys he's trying to root out.

He considers them spoilsports ... and really, don't you, too?

So far, he's only a contender for the title. Without those guys, he coulda been THE CHAMP!

What a friggin' loser. Unopposed and he could get 100%?

Sheesh.

BMT, it just goes to show you ... their soil may be full of it, but the man doing the watering ain't doing his job. I expect one more walk with a 3 gallon bucket would have watered the ground enough to make a far better yield.

It might not work around here, but like Vernon said, it's a whole lot different elsewhere...

Al-Assad 97.62%, what a loser.
Saddam's won his last election by 99.96%

I'm sure he had some poll watchers shot for that oversight.

That, and the Syrian "voting" population just dropped by 2.38%.

I'm happy they have a "democracy" and a "multi-party system". Just think what would happen if they didn't. Why maybe he would of gotten 110% of the vote.
