Built a shop this past fall that has an upstairs man cave room (14'x36') that will become my "study." This will be a room where my mounts will go, a bit of whiskey might get drank, and just a place where family and friends can lounge around and share stories.
Here's the deal, I can't decide what to put on the walls. Consider a panel that looks like weathered wood but it is only a 1/4" thick so it would need some sort of backing to make it structurally solid enough to hang mounts somewhere other than on the studs. Old barn wood is also an option but unless I can find some on a local ranch, that stuff is a bit pricey and comes in odd lengths from Menards. I used a combination of T1-11 siding and galvanized tin on the main level but not sure I want to do the same upstairs.
Anyone willing to share pictures of what did you do in your man cave?
My taxidermist set him up a nice showroom with poplar boards just like you would get from lowes. 1x12s I think, never have to search for a stud when hanging mounts or whatever..and can take abuse that drywall cant. Used metal roofing for the wainscoting and more poplar for the chair rail trim.
Well, I didn't do it but a friend did. He put up paneling that looked like some sort of old wood, barnwood maybe. Put it up floor to ceiling in a room not quiet as long as yours. Took it down a couple of years later, it darkened the room and made it sorta gloomy. He then just textured and painted the sheetrock, hung some Old West pictures and a couple of heads, looks much nicer now.
Mine room is quite big and very useful, but not at all fancy in finishes - drywall textured/painted. On one wall I hung a multi-panel world map - about 16 ft. wide by 8 feet high. Seems to start conversations. Other walls are big windows or shelves/cabinets or career memorabilia. No mounts - quite a few nice racks.
