Probably depends on the jurisdiction.
Just seems to be what I've run across.

Assuming you mean Correction Officers.........it depends.
Not the same here in NH. I wouldn’t do their job for any amount of money.

Do they swear an oath?
I wouldn’t consider them ‘cops’ out in the public.
Heck, my buddy let the the tinted windows down on the interstate and he mooned a Constable. Right up beside him in the right lane...get some of that hahahaha
As for back to the CO, I have known several who have gotten out of the army and found jobs with the state of Tn at Riverbend Max, just billy club and walkie talkie equipped. I know of another *someone*😃 thst worked at the county jail, but I think those guys are actually deputies. He had an issued Glock.

I'm a retired CO. Thankfully I never met an arrogant, cocky cop in all my years as an LEO (really need a sarcasm font). Yes, correctional officer are LEO's. A different venue but still LEO's. They have to enforce the laws the state applies to convicted criminals, up to and including the application of lethal force in certain circumstances. And we get to have the same rectal probe a cop would undergo should we be forced to use that level of force.
Yes there are arrogant, cocky CO's. But honestly I've run into more of that in the ranks of police officers than I ever did in corrections. I've had several young cops sneer at me and refer to me as a wannabe cop. I never played into that contention between the two fields of LE. I always figured we were all on the same side. I've watched the one of the same arrogant young cops shake like a dog passing a razor blade when I had to escort him through the prison during an investigation. Right through the chow hall during meal service. I thought the little punk was going to pass out he was so afraid.
Both branches of LE have hard jobs. I never wanted to be a cop. I didn't start out in life to be a correctional officer. Life hands you some situations you have to deal with as a man. At the time it was a good paying job with good benefits at a time when I needed such to care for my wife and her health needs. It turned out I was good at it and could deal with inmates without having to be a pr!ck and could do so without ceding any authority. The only reason I retired early was because of the upper administration and their corruption. Dealing with inmates was easy most of the time.
There's cocky pr!cks in every vocation. It isn't limited to correctional or police officers.
Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.

Here in Wisconsin a lot of CO’s are sheriff deputies waiting to put their time in to get out on the street.

What's the 24HCF have to say ? Some are Deputy Sheriffs. Some are just Corrections Officers, and only have authority in the prisons, and over prisoners.

My thinking...if they are guarding people in prison, those inmates are already wards of the state, do you need a sworn peace officer to tell them when/where to go? Does an inmate need to be ‘Miranda-ised’when they rip his mattress apart?
Just asking

There's cocky pr!cks in every vocation. It isn't limited to correctional or police officers. Doesn't even have to qualify as a "vocation". We have several right here on the 'Fire.

My 1 sister has been a CO for 20 some years and she loves her job because she loves her coworkers. They’re issued Glocks which I imagine is mostly for transport and court appearances.
A friend of mine got out of the Marine Corps and got a job at Monroe/3 Rivers.....he hated the entire thing. He thought that most of the scum he dealt with deserved a bullet, that included some of his coworkers. He eventually resigned from corrections and took a job as a contractor overseas. He was in Yemen for 6 or 8 months before getting some time off to come home. He hated ragheads as much as I do and enjoyed shooting them. He had no respect for anyone from that area including the Christians he was “advising”. According to him they were all filthy, smelly, undisciplined, terrible shots and worst of all....they were all chickenshit cowards devoid of even a shred of courage. The only thing he really enjoyed, aside from eliminating the enemy, was going to the arms market and checking out all the firearms. He was a gun guy so he understood the history and efficacy of various small arms. He bought a few for himself while he was there but they have to stay there since they don’t meet the ATF’s approval. 😉
I wouldn’t be a corrections officer for anything. I couldn’t spend my life around the worst that society produces. I don’t want to grow old surrounded by filth and animosity. Good guys immersed in a world of despicable filth can’t help but be affected and not in a good way. After years and decades of working to keep human detritus behind bars one cannot emerge from that world unscathed. It affects how one perceives the world around them and it affects how one views their fellow humans. Because of that it naturally affects one’s interpersonal relationships which is evident when you look at the statistics for corrections officers and their rates for divorce, suicide, etc.
God bless them because they’re definitely doing a job I wouldn’t want to do.
Politicians are the lowest form of life on earth. Liberal Democrats are the lowest form of politician. General George S. Patton, Jr.
