Are the Remington Model 700 and Model 7 fundamentally different, or are the Model 7’s just compact, short action versions of the 700?

The Seven is like a short action 700 that has had the receiver cut down further. They are closer to the XP pistol action than the 700 action.

Same barrel threads, yes. Interchangeable with attention to headspacing.

IIRC the model 7 is just a 600 action renamed. It is shorter overall than a short action 700, but with the loading/ejection port opened up for easier loading/ejection/unloading. The original 7's only had 1 scope mounting hole in the rear receiver bridge since it was so small. This meant only 1 piece bases could be used. More recent 7's now have 2 holes but they are very close together. The 7 action is notably lighter than a short action 700 action due to the shorter length and having more metal removed for a larger loading/ejection port.

Generally speaking the 7 action is what hunters want when putting together a lightweight rig, the stiffer short action 700 is the better choice for accuracy.

How does the 673 Remington action compare to the 7 and 700?

The 673 is a M7 action and bottom metal. Same/same.

The bolt release button is different on the trigger between the 7 and the 700 SA, which means the trigger does not interchange. The stocks do not interchange.

The barrels do interchange, sometimes even with headspacing. I just installed a SS 700 SA barrel and recoil lug in 7-08 onto a model 7. Headspace and roll mark timing were right on. I did have to remove a lot of wood from the barrel channel.

Bet that makes for a neat little 7-08 right there.

Thanks gents for all the responses, even though I mistakenly posted this question in the reloading forum.

I like it. Though it is far from a typical model 7 now with a 24 inch barrel of heavier weight than original. The Timney trigger was a step up. Next step will be a B&C Al Ti stock.

Next Saturday, I will see how she shoots with some 139 gr Hornady SSTs.
