Don't believe in lights either. None outside or inside. Looking out from my darkened house, outside looks like daylight. pretty much the same inside, someone walks into a darkened house from outside is at a disadvantage.

If you get that light focused on them first, if you do, it damn sure makes you the spot on target.

My dad is 78 and runs a Sig 220.
He's got arthritis and is pretty gimped up, but also has been a long time handgunner so evidently figured out a way.

M&P, Glock, Sig, CZ, etc. a lot of reliable polymer double stack 9’s are being made these days in the $500 (or less) Range. I’d suggest finding one that fits his hand the best and go with it.

If you have a range near you that rents pistols/revolvers, take your Dad over and let him try some stuff to see what he likes, feels comfortable shooting, and is able to manipulate/load/unload.

I have 2 handguns that I would have confidence in a home defense situation. The first is a S&W 625 .45 ACP, the other is a Sig P250 9mm. T he Sig is DAO so you can store it loaded, no need to rack the slide. I personally like the S&W in .45 better. I can appreciate having good sights on any gun, but I have to go back to a saying I heard about self defense, that "if you have to use sights your not really defending yourself". The meaning being, that if you have to aim to hit someone, there's enough room for you to get away from them.

Glock 19's come in several colors but there are many other handguns that would work. I suggest taking him to a range where he can shoot a number of different guns and then he can make his choice based on actual shooting experience.

No Argument here FC. A....I agree about the Sig P250. My 6906 is 9mm and DAO -- no need to rack the slide -- stays loaded. My MP 40 is 40 S&W and DAO too. The MP has a better trigger -ESP in Double Action. (I know how to Cock the 6906 for Single Action - the D A trigger pull is heavy.) EDIT -- I would NOT attempt to manually cock the 6906 in a S D situation ***** D A -- NOW!B...Both my 6906 & MP40 have GOOD sights - I practice double & triple tap > NO aiming w/sights. My philosophy is.. "If you have to pull a gun....PULL THE TRIGGER"....If you have to pull the gun! ! Jerry

Your whole point is based on the assumption that an intruder in your darkened house wouldn't let his eyes adjust to the dark before bumbling through your house and making a bunch of noise, tripping over things.
Probably not a good assumption.
Also, as far as a light ruining your night vision, it's there if you decide to turn it on but you are not required to use it if it's not to your advantage. If not, then there's this thing called the "switch" that you don't have to activate, and the light will magically not come on.
I know it sounds risky, but it works every time.
