Last week at the gun show I picked up a couple of RCBS trim dies. I like to trim .30-30 cases every loading for uniformity in crimping. It seems like the trim die might be useful, both as a case gauge and a quick file trim if needed. I'm not in for much as the price was right, so if I don't like using this I will just add to the old die pile, but wondering if I'm the only one in the world who still thinks these might be a simple and reasonably fast way to check cases for stretching and trim those that need it. Or are they a pain in the rear to use?

Yes Sir I use them,

577 Nitro
500 Nitro
505 Gibbs

I took the 500 Nitro trim die to machine shop Bud, he cut off enough threads so I could also use it to trim 50-110 WCF and 50-90 Sharps, find or trim a case to desired length, lock it down, flat file trim all brass, inside and outside chamfering and you're ready to prime and load.

Piece of cake! smile

thanks for the input, gunner500. I mainly think I just want to try something new ( or old,as the case may be), but I'm curious about them.

I've used trim dies in 7.62x39 and .308 for years. They work fine and are about as fast as any other method of trimming.

They are great to use as a gauge for trimming and for major case forming. Much cheaper to buy a couple of trim dies than a series of forming dies.

I rarely use them for trimming cases though unless it is an unusually long neck like going from 300 H&H to 300 Win.

Yes sir, I use one when forming and trimming 30 WCF to 8.15 X 46R. It came with a Schuetzen rifle I bought. It is the first one I've had and honestly, I like it. Sur is faster than the old way.
